    Title: Opening

It is 10 in the morning in Rio, 3 in the afternoon in Vatican City, and 10 at night here in Seoul.

Hello and welcome to our viewers all across the globe.

    This is Arirang Newscenter.

Title: President Park says THAAD a must for national security, vows to speak with governor of battery location

There is little room for compromise when it comes to the deployment of THAAD to the Korean peninsula.

That's President Park Geun-hye... at a Cabinet meeting earlier today... back from a brisk vacation.

She stressed that this is because the anti-missile system is directly linked to the safety and security of the Korean people.

For that and more, here's our presidential office correspondent Song Ji-sun.

The president marked her return from her holiday by encouraging Koreans to vacation in the country just as she did last week.

President Park noted that the Korean economy is showing signs of recovery,... growing 3-point-2 percent in the second quarter from last year, close to its potential growth rate.

Putting emphasis on her drives to revive the economy and boost domestic demand, the president called on lawmakers to move forward with the government's fiscal stimulus proposal,... saying a delay will not create jobs in a timely manner... when there is a massive number of layoffs in the forecast following the government's corporate restructuring drive.

"We can create 68,000 new jobs once the supplementary budget bill is passed, but if a delay in the process slows job creation, workers facing unemployment will be at unease."

President Park also touched on the chosen location for the missile defense system THAAD.

She stressed that Seoul and Washington's decision to deploy THAAD in Seongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province,... is aimed at protecting the public against North Korea's rising nuclear and missile threats... and called for national unity on security issues.

"My only calling now, as president, is protecting the nation and the people from all kinds of threats. To that end, I am doing all that I can to gain international support and cooperation from all countries across the world... to cut their aid to North Korea so it will give up its nuclear and missile programs."

"President Park vowed to sit down with the Seongju governor and local lawmakers to hear their opinions on the matter, while also pledging to continue her field visits to assess how well her policies are working to boost local economies.

    Song Ji-sun, Arirang News."

Title: Rival parties still split over THAAD deployment

On the subject of THAAD, Korea's political parties continue to be at loggerheads.

The ruling Saenuri in full support of the U.S. missile defense system, the major opposition the Minjoo Party somewhat neutral but concerned, and minor opposition People's Party expressing strong opposition.

Ji Myung-kil zooms in on the heated debate at the National Assembly.

The ruling Saenuri Party says THAAD is the best option for effectively deterring North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threats,... in a gesture of support for President Park Geun-hye's renewed appeal on Tuesday for the planned deployment.

"The U.S. nuclear umbrella doesn't come without a cost. A robust South Korea-U.S. alliance is a must. If the opposition bloc continues to oppose THAAD, it will damage the alliance."

The Saenuri floor leader called on the opposition parties to remember that President Roh Moo-hyun decided to dispatch South Korean troops to Iraq amid strong national opposition in 2003... in order to preserve the South Korea-U.S. alliance.

The minor opposition People's Party said it is even more determined to block THAAD... after visiting residents in Seongju, the planned deployment site, on Monday.

"President Park Geun-hye should withdraw THAAD deployment or else work with parliament to resolve the matter. The president should go to Seongju and listen to the peoples' voices."

The interim leader said he agrees with the citizens of Seongju that THAAD goes against the national interest and could ruin peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.

The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea, which remains neutral about the THAAD deployment, voiced concern about the possibility of retaliation from China, which is deeply opposed to the missile defense system.

The Minjoo Party said Beijing is moving to ban Korean dramas from broadcast in China and wants to prevent Korean celebrities from appearing on Chinese variety shows.

The party also said Beijing is trying to delay approval for the creation of new TV programs created in collaborative projects between the two countries.

"Although the opposition parties haven't been able to find common ground on THAAD, they have both voiced concern that the deployment could pave the way for a permanent separation of the two Koreas.

    Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News."

Title: USFK Commander says THAAD will pose no health risks to public

THAAD will be operated in a way that will not pose any health risks to the people.

That's the reassurance coming from the commander of the U.S. Forces Korea.

He also called for improved military information sharing between South Korea and other countries,... to better tackle North Korea's threats.

Kim Min-ji shares with us General Vincent Brooks' viewpoints on the defense upgrades.

The commander of the U.S. Forces Korea says the decision to deploy the U.S. THAAD system to South Korea is the right move,... in light of growing provocations from North Korea.

Speaking at a seminar hosted by the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses,... General Vincent Brooks says the THAAD battery will be able to step up South Korea's defense capability.

"We need to increase the layers of air and missile defense to counter the growing arsenal of missiles in North Korea. THAAD will add area protection and increase the ability to intercept at higher altitudes that we can without THAAD."

Seoul and Washington announced last month that they would deploy the THAAD defense system to Seongju. a county in the southeastern part of South Korea.

But residents in the area have strongly opposed the deployment calling for the annulment of the bilateral decision,... driven by concerns the system's radar could affect their health as well as their core businesses.

The four-star commander cited his experience regarding the deployment of such system in the past saying it will not pose any harm to local residents.

"When it comes to the safety in and around the radar system no one will be closer to that radar than the soldiers underneath my command. I would not recklessly endanger my soldiers while they are protecting someone else neither would I allow them to endanger someone else they were trying to protect."

Saying that Seongju has the best possible footprint,... he said facts regarding the battery need to be explained to the public so they can accept the deployment.

As for the protection of Seoul and the metropolitan area,... the commander said he will continue to procure Patriot PAC-3 advanced missiles to further enhance the layered defense system of which THAAD is part of.

On top of that, Brooks said that South Korea should also step up sharing military information with countries beyond their alliance to better react to threats from Pyongyang.

    Kim Min-ji, Arirang News.

Title: Seoul condemns Tokyo for renewed claim to Korea's Dokdo islets

Korea reloads and launches another strong response to Japan's continued false claims to the Korea-controlled Dokdo Island.

The latest comes in response to Tokyo's annual defense white paper.

Seoul's defense and foreign ministries quickly issued statements pledging stern action against Tokyo if its territorial sovereignty is ever undermined.

    Our defense correspondent Kim Hyun-bin.

Korea's defense ministry has urged Japan to withdraw all of its false territorial claims to the Korea-controlled Dokdo islets,... after Tokyo again renewed its claim to the rocky islets in its annual defense white paper on Tuesday.

This the twelfth consecutive year Japan has made the claim in the document.

"We strongly protest Japan's false claim to Dokdo in their defense white paper and urge Tokyo to correct it. If Japan continues to claim Dokdo, we will sternly counter the action and move to secure our sovereign territory."

"The ministry also summoned a defense attache from the Japanese Embassy in Seoul and submitted a formal protest against the document."

Korea's foreign ministry also released a statement, in which it said that Dokdo is Korean territory... and expressed its strong protest against Tokyo's "unjust" claims.

The ministry urged Japan to look at historical facts and actively contribute to improving Korea-Japan ties based on mutual trust.

Dokdo lies in closer proximity to Korea than Japan in the East Sea between the two countries... and has long been a source of tension between the two neighbors.

Experts believe Tokyo's renewed claim is likely to have an adverse effect on relations between Korea and Japan.

    Kim Hyun-bin, Arirang News.

Title: Japan's defense paper stresses China's growing threat, N. Korea nuke

But, Japan's 484-page white paper approved by that country's cabinet, devotes

more words to China than any other regional powers... stressing that Beijing's military build-up is increasingly severe.

On North Korea, it says the regime, which conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and sent a satellite into orbit the following month, might be able to produce a nuclear weapon small enough to launch on a long-range missile.

Title: Japan's annual defense white paper, a way to publicize the Dokdo territorial dispute

Now, why is Japan's white paper the source of much protest, especially from neighboring countries? That's becuase the annual publication outlines Tokyo's position in security related issues as well as defense policies, thus placing groundless claims such as describing Korea's Dokdo Island as its territory does nothing but increase frictions with Seoul.

    Our Lee Minyoung explains more.

The annual defense white paper published by the Japanese defense ministry is an official governmental document that examines a wide range of security-related issues from annual analyses on neighboring countries' military status to Japan's defense policies.

Since the paper is being reported to the Cabinet, the content itself can be interpreted as the official position of the Japanese government....which is why the wording in the paper every year has become a critical concern for neighboring countries, including Korea.

And it was since 2005, during the administration of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, that the Japanese government has been describing Korea's easternmost island of Dokdo as its "sovereign territory"...making this year the 12th consecutive year for Tokyo to officially release such false claim.

This year's paper states that "The territorial issue over our sovereign territory of the Northern Territories and Takeshima still remains unresolved," which hasn't changed a bit from what has been written in last year's paper.

The paper also wrongfully introduces Dokdo as being within Japanese airspace.

"The underlying intention of the Japanese government is to play up the friction between Korea and Japan over the islets...by officially stating that Dokdo is an area with an unresolved 'territorial issue' and bring this issue before the international court."

Korea has been voicing its protest warning Japan to refrain from releasing groundless claims.

The Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs also lodged a formal protest on Tuesday by summoning Japan's defense attache from the Japanese Embassy in Seoul.

"The Korean government should indeed protest Japan's actions, but it should be careful not to get too caught up in a territorial dispute."

The expert added that the Korean government should put more effort in continuously utilizing and looking after Dokdo along with urging Japan to make revisions to the images and content in official documents that depict Dokdo as Japanese territory.

Title: Korea halts sales of Volkswagen vehicles in emissions-rigging scandal

Korea has confirmed that it's suspending sales of scores of Volkswagen and Audi models in this country.

The models in question were caught up in an escalating scandal involving fabricated documents on emissions, fuel efficiency, and noise levels.

    Lee Ji-won reports.

The environment ministry on Tuesday nullified the certifications of vehicles imported to the country by Audi Volkswagen Korea.

"The Ministry of Environment revokes the certifications for 80 submodels of 32 models."

The cars can't be sold without the certifications, and the decision affects 83-thousand cars in Korea that have already been sold, while sales of 11-thousand cars will be banned.

This comes after the ministry held a hearing last week, where officials representing the automaker explained Volkswagen's position on the government's push to suspend sales.

Although the German auto giant voluntarily suspended sales prior to that hearing,... it denied any manipulation of emissions levels, but acknowledged making "errors" on test documents.

But after the hearing and review, the ministry confirmed the sales suspension for 80 submodels and fined Audi Volkswagen Korea 16 million U.S. dollars.

It also plans to recall an unspecified number of vehicles -- to be announced at a later date.

The government had already been moving to enforce a sales ban on the vehicles in question, including the Golf, Jetta TDI, Audi A6 and other diesel and gasoline models, saying test documents for emissions and noise levels were forged in order to get the certifications.

After a final review, the ministry took out two overlapping models, and added three -- the Audi A3, A8 and A8L.

Audi Volkswagen Korea is already seeing its sales plunge in Korea, and it can't register new cars for sale,... which will have an even bigger impact.

    Lee Ji-won, Arirang News.

Title: Number of N. Korean defectors increase for the first time in 2016 since Kim Jong-un took helm

A new report shows the number of North Koreans defecting to the South has shot up this year.

This is the first time that the number has increased since the regime's leader Kim Jong-un came to power around four-and-a-half years ago.

For a closer look on what may be triggering the exodus, here's Connie Kim.

The declining trend of North Koreans fleeing the regime since young Kim Jong-un rose to power has taken a turnaround this year.

Seoul's unification ministry said Tuesday about 815 North Koreans entered the South in the first seven months of this year, up more than 15-and-a-half percent from the same period last year.

Looking at the past, the number of North Koreans fleeing to the South every year dropped to less than half last year from when Kim took the helm in 2011.

Most experts on North Korea say an increasing number of people in the North may be expressing dissatisfaction against the dictatorial regime and desiring new opportunities after finding out through South Korean media better means to live.

A unification ministry official also said the jump in the number of defectors could be the result of more North Koreans already staying in China deciding to enter the South.

What's also noteworthy is the number of well-off North Koreans working abroad has reportedly increased this year.

These workers,... part of the North's middle class,... are said to send up to 90-percent of their monthly income back to Pyongyang.

There's speculation the strongest-to-date UN sanctions adopted against the North following its nuclear and missile provocations early this year have choked cash flows into Pyongyang and destabilized the regime.

"With international sanctions on the North in full swing, it seems an increasing number of North Korean workers abroad are deciding to defect as they are afraid of the punishment they could get if they don't fulfill the quota to send back to North Korea."

Just a few months ago,... more than a dozen North Koreans working at a restaurant in China defected en masse to South Korea in an unprecedented case.

With more North Koreans expected to arrive in South Korea in the coming months,... experts forecast the number of North Korean defectors could exceed 30-thousand by October.

Title: Tech companies make the top 5 most valuable public companies list

As the the U.S. stock market closed on Monday, Amazon and Facebook passed Exxon Mobile in market capitalization,... making them the fourth and fifth most valuable public companies following Apple, Alphabet and Microsoft.

That means... for the first time ever... the five most valuable public companies in the world,...are all tech companies.

Our Kim Hye-sung tells us if this trend is likely to continue.

Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook.

These Silicon Valley tech giants are now the world's five most valuable companies.

At the close of U.S. trading on Monday, Amazon and Facebook surpassed Exxon Mobile to become the world's fourth and fifth most valuable firms based on market capitalization.

The switch came a week after Exxon revealed their profits had tumbled 59 percent last quarter, leading to a more than three percent drop in the company's market capitalization on Monday.

The oil giant has struggled amid falling oil and natural gas prices over the last couple of years, with its revenue dropping by 142 billion U.S. dollars between 2014 & 2015.

And oil prices slipped below the psychologically important level of $40 a barrel on Monday, further pulling down Exxon's stock price.

On the other hand, Amazon posted its fifth straight quarter of profit, the biggest revenue increase in four years, thanks to its growing cloud computing business, moving up from seventh to the fourth most valuable company.

All four other tech companies' earnings beat market expectations.

While Apple's revenue between April and June fell 15 percent from the same period last year due to falling iphone sales, it still beat market expectations and secured its position at number one.

Google's parent company Alphabet and Microsoft came in second and third, driven by their mobile ad sales and cloud business respectively.

Facebook came in 5th, with its net profit increasing 186 percent year on year, recording more than 2 billion dollars, also driven by mobile advertising.

    -

"Tech companies are leading the stock market in the U.S. and Korea. As oil prices remain low and most investments are in the tech industry right now, IT companies are going to continue posting stellar earnings, and this trend is likely to continue for a while."

But just ten years ago, the top ten most valuable public companies were mainly banks like AIG, Citygroup and Bank of America, with only one tech company,...Microsoft on the list.

So tech companies will have to keep innovating to keep their lead in the stock market.

    Kim Hyesung, Arirang News.

Title: Korea projected to go 10 for 10 in Rio, Sports Illustrated says

Moving on to the upcoming Summer Olympics in Rio...

One of the world's leading sports magazines has released its medal projections for the Rio Games... and its forecast of a golden harvest for Team Korea is adding some extra excitement.

But, on the ground in Rio... with only three days left until the big day... there are lingering questions about whether Brazil will ever be ready in time.

Lee Un-shin has the latest buzz surrounding the Rio Olympics.

Team Korea is on track to reach its goal of bringing home 10 gold medals for a top 10 finish at this year's Rio Olympics,... if the predictions by an acclaimed American sports magazine come true.

Sports Illustrated has released its medal predictions for all 196 countries in all 306 events.

Korea is expected to grab 10 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze medals,... for a ninth place finish overall.

The magazine predicts Korea will continue its winning streak in archery, with gold and silver in both the men's and women's events and gold in the team competition.

The country is also expected to pick up a smattering of medals in judo, badminton and taekwondo -- but no gold for the athletes practicing Korea's traditional martial art.

The magazine projects the United States and China will take home the biggest medal haul this year, with 45 golds each.

More than half a million sports fans are descending on Brazil as we speak, giving the country's embattled economy a much-needed boost.

But amid the excitement, there are still lingering concerns about the host city's new subway line, which was initiated to shuttle visitors from all over the world to Olympic events.

It's one of the main legacy projects of the Games, and it's reportedly still not complete.

Fleets of buses have been organized as a backup transportation mode.

The delay is just one of a long list of problems for Brazil ahead of the main event,... which is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday with more than 10-thousand participating athletes.

In honor of the birthplace of the Games,... Greece will be first in the Parade of Nations that kicks things off, followed by other countries in order according to the Brazilian Portuguese alphabet, which makes South Korea 52nd.

Host country Brazil will be the last to appear.

The question is -- will they be ready?

Title: 'Post Genome Project' aims to reinforce beneficial findings in daily food

The mapping and sequencing of DNA in crops and plants is expected to open a new chapter in resolving food security... as deciphering human DNA had in medicine.

For this week's IT and Science Front, we look into the Korean government's Post Genome Project... aimed at collecting data of plant DNA to eventually reinforce medicinal qualities in our daily food consumption.

Our IT and Science correspondent, Kim Ji-yeon.

    "You are what you eat."

That's one of the principle ideas prompting worldwide studies into what the general population consume... and to find ways to reinforce beneficial findings in daily food and medicine supplies.

And the Korean government has engaged in a years-long project to map out the DNA of plants and crops that has traditionally been known to have medicinal effects on the human body.

The goal is to acquire as much data as possible to help come up with better solutions to real-world problems endangering food security.

"To better prepare for future global food shortages stemming from abnormal weather patterns and global warming, the government is hoping to develop genomic and bioinformatics technology and promote the local agriculture industry."

The mapping of vital crops and insects are part of the Rural Development Administration's Post Genome Project... launched in 2014.

It's mainly comprised of genome sequence listing, microscopic scanning via confocal laser technology and experimental breeding following specific DNA extraction.

Genomics is a discipline of genetics that focuses on the sequencing and analysis of an organism's DNA. It can be used to zero in on certain genes that might be responsible for either disease vulnerability or resistance.

The project was inspired by the mapping and deciphering of the human DNA, completed in 2003... and effectively in use now for developing medical treatment.

"The DNA mapping can be used to promote the creation and improvement of plant breeds such as increasing their resistance to diseases and insect pests... as well as their medicinal qualities."

The administration says it has already seen great progress... with the application of big data technology into its genome project.

The administration helped develop the world's first DNA mapping of agricultural breeds including rice , cabbage, chili pepper, ginseng and bellflowers.

It has also led local scientists to publish around 3-hundred academic papers every year through the Science Citation Index... and some 2-hundred patents.

"The project has also paved the way for various breakthroughs to be featured in the globally renowned scientific journals 'Nature' and 'Science' including the invention of molecular scissors... used for cutting DNA for intended gene targets... and deciphering the photosynthesis of plankton."

The project has also brought commercial benefits for the cosmetics sector.

It's projected that the development of retinoid, a substance made by herbivores after consuming carotenoid that alleviates acne, could soon be artificially produced... and eventually reduce costs of retinoid from the current price of 135 U.S. dollar per gram.

The administration says its next phase of the Post Genome Project is to complete its big data database and increase the number of deciphered breeds to 40 by 2021.

Title: Typhoon Nida hits Hong Kong and China

Typhoon Nida is sweeping through Hong Kong and southern China shutting businesses and disrupting air, sea and land transport. Barry Welsh joins us live in the studio. Over 150 flights have been cancelled in Hong Kong and cities in Southern China are on high alert. Barry what's happening on the ground?

Typhoon Nida made its first landfall in the early hours of this morning in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, bringing with it high winds and heavy rains. Over 100,000 people were evacuated from the southern Guangdong province and transferred to safe zones before the typhoon hit . Local authorities have taken extreme precautions; cancelling 202 flights and 160 trains. Several cities in the region have closed businesses and schools as they wait out the typhoon.

Gale force winds also shut down most of Hong Kong. The financial hub's first major typhoon this year brought with it gales of more than 100 km per hour. So far more than 150 flights have been cancelled and almost 300 delayed,... stranding 100s of passengers at the airport. A typhoon signal 8 warning has been in place since Monday. Signals above number three call for all government agencies to shut down operations. The city's streets are almost deserted, most shops are closed and some locals have complained about the effects on their business:

"A lot of newspapers were blown away and this made work more difficult."

The Hong Kong stock exchange suspended the morning trading session and will remain shut as long as the signal 8 warning is in place.

Title: Turkish government takes over military factories, shipyards

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says Turkey's government has taken over

factories and shipyards that had been under military control.

The move comes as part of a wide-ranging shake-up of the armed forces following last month's abortive coup.

"There are lots of factories and shipyards connected to the military general staff. Soldiers will do their job, but they won't deal with the shipyards. We've taken control of them from the military and have given them to the ministry of defense."

Yildirim, who was speaking to members of his ruling AK Party in parliament, insisted that the restructuring of Turkey's armed forces would not weaken the military, but put its focus on activities essential for national security.

"Exerting all efforts to restructure our army forces is indispensable in order to be ready for the security of our country and region, as threats vary from short, medium and long term."

Following the coup there has been some civil unrest in several areas of Turkey.

Yes that's right. Turkey has various problems to contend with. Yesterday around 150 civilians protested the arrival of U.S diplomats because of the American response to the coup.

And Kurdish militants in the Northeast committed a deadly attack yesterday.

6 police officers were killed and 4 wounded, 2 seriously, in a car bomb attack. A ceasefire between the militants and the Turkish government collapsed last year.

Title: (22 Scorching heat to persist, passing showers at times

An sudden heavy rain swept the capital along with strong winds and thunder, almost as if a typhoon was on its way. Let's go over to our Lee Jeehyun at the weather center.

Jee-hyun, how much rain did we get here in the capital?

Hello Conn-young. Yes, the rain didn't last long but quite heavy. Seochogu district, in the southern part of Seoul and where Arirang TV is headquartered, received the most amount of rainfall, recording some 42 millimeters of precipitation.

As you said, it rained quite heavily in such a short period of time. Hopefully the shower will help cool down conditions for tomorrow?

Not really for the capital area. The mercury will stay high tomorrow under partly sunny skies but the southern provinces will get a slight relief from the heat with isolated rain in the forecast... that's why the heat wave warning was downgraded to an advisory for those regions.

    Moving on to tomorrow's temperatures,

The daily low in Seoul will start at 22, Daejeon and Daegu will start out at 24 degrees Celsius.

The high in Seoul will get up to 33,... while Daegu and Gwangju will see highs of 32 degrees.
