    Title: Opening

It is 10 in the morning in Rio de Janeiro and 10 in the evening here in Seoul. Hello and welcome to our viewers all across the globe. You're watching Arirang Newscenter.

Title: China blocks broadcasts, events involving Korean celebrities

Some Chinese media are reporting that Chinese productions and TV programs that involve South Korean celebrities are either canceling the joint partnership OR are at risk of furthering any more collaboration in the future.

Some view this as an apparent sign that China has begun showing discontent over Seoul's latest decision to deploy a sophisticated U.S. missile defense system to the Korean peninsula.

    Partly rumors, but partly not.

    First, here's our Oh Jung-hee.

Korea's pop culture exports,... which have until now enjoyed a major boom in China,... could be facing their biggest threat in the country to date.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that Chinese authorities are targeting Korean stars and content,... in an apparent protest against Seoul's decision to deploy the THAAD missile defense system to the peninsula.

Although Seoul says the system is solely for its self-defense, Bejing is strongly opposed, saying it threatens its national security interests.

The Journal reports that a fan meeting for Kim Woo-bin and Bae Suzy,... scheduled to take place in Beijing on Saturday,.. was canceled,... due to "forces beyond our control" according to one broadcaster.

Industry sources also say the Chinese premiere of South Korean actor Lee Joon-gi's latest film may not involve Lee as Chinese regulators have required more materials than usual for his visa-application.

China's state-run newspaper Huanqiu is also carrying out a survey,... asking people whether Korean actor Park Bo-gum insulted the Great Wall of China in an advertisement -- and almost 80 percent of respondents have said yes.

China says Korea has only itself to blame.

Also on Thursday, Chinese state-run English-language newspaper Global Times ran an opinion piece that said: "It's not China's fault if South Korean stars eventually become the scapegoat of the THAAD deployment."

The piece also said that "some local Chinese TV stations have received instructions from regulators" to block programs involving South Korean stars.

Some say it's too soon to jump to conclusions and the backlash from China over-exaggerated.

There are also unconfirmed rumors filling the air between Seoul and Beijing.

Nonetheless, Korea's entertainment and other industries are keeping close tabs on their Chinese partners... as local media reports otherwise and there are at least a few confirmed cases of abrupt cancellations.

    Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News.

Title: China must not intervene to change S. Korea's stance on THAAD deployment : Experts

Some experts view... this latest move by China's TV stations and production companies are part of Beijing's plan to stir internal conflict within South Korea and lead the Seoul government to withdraw its decision to deploy the THAAD battery.

Our Connie Kim spoke to some international relations and regional studies experts for their take on what the next move by China may be and how Seoul should position itself in dealing with this issue.

Amid China's media slamming South Korea for its decision to deploy the U.S.-made THAAD unit to the Korean peninsula,

...South Korea's foreign minister Yun Byung-se told reporters on Friday Seoul is keeping a close watch on the recent responses from Chinese media, adding Seoul would not make a hasty determination and should work toward resolving this issue.

Beijing has not made it official to start cutting exchanges but most experts say the central government could be behind the act.

"Beijing's pressure is being done on a civilian level. This means the measures can be normalized whenever Seoul withdraws its stance on the THAAD deployment. China is trying to stir conflict within South Korea and pressure the government."

What experts criticize is China's lukewarm stance towards the North's nuclear policies.

Beijing has been reluctant on tightening its grip on Pyongyang and its nuclear ambitions, which is what triggered the decision to deploy THAAD to the Korean peninsula.

Analysts emphasize it's important for China to persuade North Korea in giving up its nuclear weapons and missile programs and refrain from intervening in South Korea's decision.

"It's important to show that Korea's survival and security are not negotiable. If China goes beyond expressing its position on the THAAD deployment, anti-Chinese sentiment will strengthen which will be of no help to Beijing."

Most China watchers in Seoul say Beijing will not likely make drastic decisions on South Korea, leading to speculations of possible discussions between the two nations.

"Some experts predict the South Korean and Chinese presidents will meet next month, which could mark an important turning point between the two countries as they try to iron out the biggest concerns about the THAAD deployment.

    Connie Kim, Arirang News."

Title: Anti-graft law to take effect from Sept. 28th as scheduled; price limit on the law to be concluded at Office for Gov't Policy Coordination

Now, it appears Korea's ambitious yet controversial anti-graft law will take effect on schedule in late September... despite objections from certain industries in this country.

    Park Ji-won has details.

The Ministry of Government Legislation concluded on Friday that the government cannot accept demands to postpone the enforcement of the anti-graft law dubbed the Kim Young-ran Act.

The legislation ministry said,... the law's supplementary provision clearly states September 28 as the date when the act is to become effective,... and thus it's not possible to change such clause, by simply revising enforcement ordinances.

Regarding the requests from ministries, including agriculture and fisheries,... to adjust the price limits on meals and gifts given to government officials,... the Ministry of Government Legislation said the decision will be later made at the Office for Government Policy Coordination.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary committee on agriculture, rural affairs and fisheries adopted a resolution,... calling for the government to revise price caps stipulated in the anti-corruption law's implementing ordinances as they didn't consider important factors such as inflation.

The ordinances in the anti-corruption law stipulate price caps of about 27 U.S. dollars for meals,... and 45 dollars for gifts provided to government officials.

However, the nation's Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, which drafted the price limits in the first place,... said the public's opinions highly support the current price caps set forth in the ordinances.

The Kim Young-ran law passed the assembly early last year,... aiming to bring more transparency in the public sector.

    Park Ji-won, Arirang News.

Title: Korea's rival parties gear up for leadership race

Korea's two main rival political parties are now a step closer to electing their next party leaders.

The ruling Saenuri and the main opposition the Minjoo Party of Korea should have their respective leaderships in place before the month is up.

Our National Assembly correspondent Ji Myung-kil has the latest on how those races are shaping up.

The ruling Saenuri Party narrowed the list of contenders for its top leadership post from five to four on Friday.

Three of the candidates -- Lee Jung-hyun, Lee Ju-young and Han Sun-kyo -- are with the pro-President Park Geun-hye circle.

The fourth candidate, Joo Ho-young, is outside of that group.

All four of them vowed to reform the party and work to overcome the internal factional strife that left the party divided after its crushing defeat in the April general election.

Earlier in the day, all of the candidates had given speeches at a stadium in Cheonan, South Chungcheongnam-do province.

The campaign event, the third of its kind, also featured remarks by the eleven members vying for the six vacant spots on the Supreme Council.

The leadership election will take place as part of the party's national convention next Tuesday.

On the other side of the aisle, the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea held an in-house primary on Friday... and whittled down the number of contenders... for its leadership post... from four to three.

Two of the candidates -- Choo Mi-ae and Kim Sang-gon -- have close ties to former party leader Moon Jae-in,... who represents the Roh Moo-hyun faction,... while Lee Jong-kul does not.

"I, Choo Mi-ae , will make a stable, united party. We will overcome national divisions and open an era for the people."

"I, Lee Jong-kul , will do my part to select a competitive candidate who can win in the upcoming presidential election."

The Minjoo Party will hold its national convention and select its new leader on August 27th.

"The minor opposition People's Party plans to maintain its interim leadership under Park Jie-won until the end of the year.

    Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News."

Title: Heat wave sweeps across Korea

It was another sizzling hot day here in Korea today. We thought yesterday was bad. Well, never speak too soon, they say. The mercury in Seoul rose to a record high of 36 degrees Celsius today. Last week alone, seven people died due to heat-related causes in this country.

And, one of the most dangerous places to be under such weather -- is inside a car that's been parked outside under the blazing Sun.

    Our Kim Hyesung reports.

    Thirty-six degrees Celsius.

Seoul's temperature hit a record high this Friday afternoon.

In this scorching heat, outdoor parking lots can feel like a blast furnace and your car,... like a sauna on four wheels.

"When I open the door,...all that heat, it's just....unbearable and makes it hard to breathe."

"It's hard to step into my car after parking it outdoors for several hours. All that heat...."

At the peak of summer, the interior of your car can heat up to dangerous temperatures.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seven people died from heat related diseases like heatstroke over the last ten days, with over four-hundred patients suffering from heat related diseases since May.

And last Friday, a 4-year-old boy who was left forgotten inside a bus in the scorching heat for over eight hours remains in coma.

""As you can see, your car can be an especially dangerous place. The temperature of a parked car sitting out in the sun for more than 3 hours could get up to 90 degrees Celsius."

And if you can't park your car under a roof or in the shade, here are some ways you can reduce its interior temperature.

Open the driver side door, open and close four to five times, which helps lower the temperature by eight degrees Celsius.

Open the car windows slowly to drive out the hot air out from the bottom, and allow air to circulate.

Then, turn on the A/C and wait for about two minutes to help cool down your vehicle.

With the weather agency expecting these sweltering conditions to continue for the rest of the week, experts also recommend the elderly and the young to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during the day.

Title: President Park encourages working moms at company with flextime system

One of President Park Geun-hye's key policy initiatives is the flexible working hours program... a customized program for each person designed to help Koreans maintain a good balance between work and their family.

President Park made another round of on-site check ups this Friday. Our top office correspondent Song Ji-sun has this report.

President Park Geun-hye on Friday visited a bank that was the first to adopt a flextime program among financial institutions that help employees find the most appropriate work schedules to maintain balance between work and family.

The flextime system allows employees that are not required to work at designated desks, such as field sales and independent research, to work from a nearby Smart Work Center, ...or even work from home.

Those having to commute long hours, or even have to pick-up and drop off children at certain hours are content with the new system,... and participating companies are seeing a drop in quitting rates since adopting the program as working mothers choose to return to work after their maternity leaves.

"I'm a mother of two children, one is four and the other seven years old. It was really tough for me to return to work due to the long commuting hours but working from here at the Smart Work Center, has really improved things for me. The bank also strongly supports the system."

"We must join the trend of balancing work and family. For any company, as well as for the entire nation, it is a must to enable employees to pursue such balance, and the flextime system is a requisite to do so."

"President Park said newly developed technologies must contribute to improving the working environment of the people,... and called on the banking sector to continue with reforms that help them counter the rapid changes in society.

    Song Ji-sun, Arirang News."

Title: Minimum wage set at 6,470 won for 2017

The minimum wage for next year here in Korea has been finalized. It's up more than seven percent from this year... but experts note that doesn't necessarily mean better living standards for wage workers.

    Kim Min-ji reports.

Six-thousand-four-hundred-70 won -- or roughly five U.S. dollars and 80 cents.

That's the minimum wage in Korea starting next year.

It means workers will earn about 46 dollars a day,... or 12-hundred dollars a month,... if they work eight hours daily.

Since President Park Geun-hye took office in 2013,... the minimum wage has been on a steady rise,... but next year's figure slowed from the eight percent hike for this year.

Despite an uptick,... Korea's minimum wage level sits in the lower end of the ladder.

Korea's minimum wage stood at 5 dollars and 40 cents for 2015,... while the OECD average was 6 dollars and 60 cents.

The highest was Luxembourg,... followed by Australia and France.

Still, Korea's hike in minimum wage has been one of the fastest growing.

Neighboring Japan, for one, recently decided on a hike of three percent.

However, the increase hasn't necessarily translated into better living conditions for Korean wage earners.

"The minimum wage is supposed to equal the minimum amount of money required to make ends meet. However, the set wage for Korea is not enough. On top of that, the government's social wages is not even a third of the OECD average. That's why companies have to push up the wages -- resulting in bigger hikes than other countries."

But this, at the same time, is a double edged sword.

Sharp increases puts more burden on smaller firms and self-employed business people -- as they would face higher labor costs that could lead to hiring fewer new employees.

Experts say the government needs to step up welfare expenses,... and come up with a system of different wages that matches the characteristics of each region and type of job.

    Kim Min-ji, Arirang News.

Title: Prosecution summons Daewoo Shipbuilding CFO over accounting fraud

Korea's prosecution has summoned the chief financial officer of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, one of the nation's top three shipbuilders and the world's second largest... on allegations of an accounting fraud amounting to more than 100 million U.S. dollars.

Our Hwang Ji-hye has the details.

Seoul's prosecutors summoned Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering's Chief Financial Officer Kim Youl-jung on Friday... for questioning over his alleged accounting fraud.

A special investigation team within the prosecution says... new findings have pointed to Kim... cooking the books to cover up the company's operating losses by around 120-billion won,... or roughly 100 million U.S. dollars last year.

The team also adds... that lower-level employees at Daewoo have admitted the fraud.

The accusations coming from the current management board... goes against its earlier pledge to run the company transparently... and clean up irregularities the shipbuilder's former management had been involved in.

Late last month, the prosecution indicted former head of Daewoo shipbuilding Ko Jae-ho on the same accounting fraud charges.

Ko headed the company from 2012 to 2015.

The fresh allegations are widely expected to even put Daewoo on the brink of collapse... as they would make it harder for the cash-strapped company to win rescue packages from state-run creditors.

Last year, the Korea Development Bank and Export-Import Bank of Korea announced a 3-point-7 billion dollar bailout plan as Daewoo faces financial trouble amid a glut of vessels and declining orders due to a global economic slowdown.

Out of the 3-point-7 billion funds to improve the company's cash flow problems,... around 900 million has yet to be received.

    Hwang Ji-hye, Arirang News.

Title: Annual festival highlights Gochang County's treasures

Do you remember having fun in the mud as a child? We all loved getting covered in mud head to toe as children.

If you are looking to revisit those fond childhood memories AND experience a biosphere reserve of world-class, Gochang in Korea's southwest is where you want to be just about now.

Our Lee Minyoung is getting muddy herself in the beautiful wetlands of Gochang.

Excited children plop into the water to catch puncheon eel, native to Gochang County, with their bare hands.

Those who are successful can either eat their catch or take it home.

Nearby, kids soak each other with water guns, some falling face-first into the muddy water with a loud splash.

They're here for the annual festival organized by the Mandol Wetlands Experience Center that kicked off on Friday, joining thousands of people who converged on the area to get a glimpse of Korea's natural wetlands.

"Gochang, some 3-hundred kilometers southwest of Seoul, was designated as a Unesco-protected biosphere reserve in 2013 for its mud flats and wetlands. These ecosystems are home to a wide range of natural monuments and rare species of plants and animals."

For many, the highlight of the three-day festival is a tour that shuttles visitors around on a refurbished bus... and lets them try their hand at digging for clams and catching mullet fish.

"I came with my family and friends today and we're having so much fun. We caught all of these clams "

"I was thinking about where to go with my family for summer vacation and chose this place to teach my kids how to interact with nature. I think it was a great idea. I'm happy to see my kids enjoying it so much."

At a nearby wetland center, there is also a series of interactive educational programs to help students understand the ecosystem... and the marine organisms that call the wetlands home.

"Even though it is very important to preserve our mud flats, these kinds of educational programs are very rare. Our programs aim to teach students the environmental value of our natural wetlands by communing with them."

"Instead of staying at home in this hot weather, I wanted to spend some time with my kids, learning about the beauty around us that we may have overlooked. It was a very informative and meaningful time for us."

The festival -- which not only offers an abundance of programs and festivities, but also introduces children to the delights of the area's natural resources and cultural assets -- runs through Sunday.

    Lee Minyoung, Arirang News, Gochang.

    Title: Rio Olympics 2016 Bridge

    2016

Title: Olympics 2016: All eyes on Rio with less than a day to go till opening ceremony

    Let the Games begin.

We are now only short hours away from the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Thousands of athletes from all over the world are now ready... waiting with hopeful hearts that their hard work and dedication pays off in Olympic glory.

Live in the studio with me to talk us through the Olympic Games is our very own Kwon Jang-ho.

Jang-ho, the Games have yet to begin but already Team Korea has a huge victory under the belt.

That's right. The men's national football team, that is... defeating Fiji eight-nil

It was an impressive performance and was a real statement of intent from the Korean team.

It was actually a bit of a nervy start, as they were only able to break through Fiji's defense once in the first half.

But after the half-time break Korea's quality shone-through, with 7 seven goals, including 3 in two minutes.

Midfielder Ryu Seung-woo picked up a hat-trick, the first ever for a Korean player in the Olympics.

It was definitely an Olympic moment that will be recounted over and over again.

Eight goals in one match - that's gotta be the most goals the Korean team has scored in one game.

That's right, but although the score itself was impressive, it's wasn't a huge surprise. Fiji is one of the lowest ranked teams in international football, and they only just qualified for the Olympics.

But it was important to beat them, and beat them well, because Korea is grouped with some strong teams, Germany and Mexico, and goal difference could make the difference for the Korean team to reach the knockout stages.

Title: Olympics 2016: All eyes on Rio with less than a day to go till opening ceremony

Great. Let's now move on to the actual start of the games, what billions of people will be tuning into - the grand opening ceremony. It wasn't an easy road for Rio to bring the Games to this point. They're keeping all the details of the big opening under wraps but what can we expect?

Well as I'm sure you're aware there have been a whole host of problems leading up to the games, such as virus outbreaks, political unrest and doping scandals. Another one of those problems has been the country's economic difficulties, and that's had a direct effect on the opening ceremony.

Although the exact cost is now known, it's thought to be at least half of the 40 million dollars spent by London in 2012, and organisers have been downplaying expectations, saying it will be more analogue than digital.

But they are still promising a 'cool' show, showcasing the countries creativity and can-do spirit.

"So what you are going to see is all Brazilian, pure, beautiful creativity from Brazil that will touch the heart."

"Our budget is less than what we expected, but we are used to such things. It is important to be flexible."

Title: Olympics 2016: All eyes on Rio with less than a day to go till opening ceremony

A great start for Team Korea. Now, other than football, whatelse do we have lined up for the weekend, let's start with.

Well it's going to be a jam-packed and hopefully golden weekend for Korea, with possibly up to seven gold medals up for grabs. On Saturday the first Olympic action Korea sees will be in the women's volleyball, a grudge match against Asian rivals Japan. Expect fierce action and high emotion in that one.

Then the men's team archery, judo and women's fencing competitions kick off, with strong medal prospects in all three.

But, considering the duration of the matches... Korea's very first gold at this year's Olympics is expected to come at the men's 10-meter air pistol shooting... where Olympic champion Jin Jong-oh vies for his third consecutive gold medal. That will be a record that has never been been achieved in Korea.

And in men's swimming we have the return of Marine Boy, Park Tae-hwan, who will be competing in the 400-meter freestyle, and who was only made eligle to compete last month after winning his case against the Korean Olympic Committee for an extended doping ban.

For viewers here in Korea, make sure you note the time difference, which is exactly 12 hours. It does mean if you want to watch some of those gold medal moments, you will have to set your alarm clocks early or not sleep at all.

Right. Seoul and Rio just about exactly halfway across the globe. So, Jang-ho, I take it, you will be staying up all night to watch the games?

Absolutely, but I fear Monday morning might be quite rough.

As rough as it may be, I'm sure you will follow them up to the minute... we're relying on you to keep us updated on the Games all throughout the 17-day long Rio Olympics. Great job, Jang-ho. We'll see you on Monday hopefully with some golden news in your basket.

Title: PyeongChang 2018 Olympic organizers in Rio to pick up know how

Now, over in Rio de Janeiro...

As Rio ushers in the 2016 Summer Games... a certain group of people are prepping for another Olympics of their own... by paying extra close attention to the do's and don'ts... the successes and shortcomings of the Rio Games.

They are Korea's PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Our Shin Semin met up with them on the ground in Rio.

While the focus of athletes, reporters and fans are concentrated on Rio with the 2016 Olympics about to start, there are those looking a step ahead.

Recognizing the focus will quickly switch to Korea's alpine town of PyeongChang after the curtain comes down on the Rio games, the head of the local organizing committee for the 2018 winter games is positive everything will be in place on time.

"First and foremost, I would like to assure you that our preparations are fully on track. Together with my team, I will work hard for success of the games in 2018."

Speaking to reporters in Rio, Lee said the PyeongChang organizing team is focused on absorbing everything it takes to put on the best Olympics possible in 2018.

Regarding fears of stadiums and other infrastructure becoming so-called "white elephants" after the Olympics are over,.. the chief of the PyeongChang organizing committee said they've learnt from past examples,... and facilities will not fall into costly disrepair after the sporting event.

"Gangwon-do Province will be developed with infrastructure, including high speed railways and expressways connecting Incheon International Airport all the way to Gangneung. It takes about 90 minutes,so it's a huge effect of the Olympic games."

In the coming days and weeks,... the PyeongChang organizing team will also meet with the organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games and the 2022 Beijing Winter Games.

They plan to share their respective know-how to ensure Asia successfully pulls off the next three Olympics.

"With less than two years until the world shifts its focus to PyeongChang, the next host city of the Olympics,... Korea's Olympic organizing committee is confident that the country's first ever winter Olympics will be just as successful as any other.

Shin Se-min, Arirang News, Rio de Janeiro."

    Title: CULTURES SOPT TITLE

    2016. 06.10~

Title: Massive exhibition shows Sinan shipwreck treasures

Ever wondered what treasures from a 14th century sunken trove look like?

Well, wonder no more. Relics from a wrecked merchant ship from the 14th century off the Sinan coast are on display at the national museum in downtown Seoul... marking the 40th anniversary of the excavation.

Our Lee Jiwon gives us a glimpse of the "Discoveries from the Sinan Shipwreck" on our Culture Spot tonight.

Korean divers plunged into waters off the southwestern coast back in 1979 on the country's first underwater treasure hunt.

It was the first of many expeditions to pull up a trove of artifacts from a ship that had met its end... 652 years before.

Now, the relics are part of a massive exhibition at the National Museum of Korea... commemorating the 40th anniversary of the excavation.

The relics are from a sunken Chinese ship that was discovered in 1975, when a Korean fisherman pulled up six pieces of porcelain and celadon from the vessel.

After close study and analysis, Korea's Cultural Properties Management Bureau determined the merchant vessel,... loaded with Chinese porcelain, coins and other goods,... had embarked from China's Qingyuan prefecture, in what is now Ningbo, in June 1323... on its way to Japan.

It headed north on the marine trade route that had been established by Asian nations in the 14th century.

But it is presumed to have met a typhoon along the way... and sank off of Sinan County, in present-day Jeollanam-do Province.

"This is the actual size of the bow, giving visitors an idea of just how big the vessel would have had to be to have carried 24-thousand pieces of porcelain and other goods."

The artifacts recovered from the ship range from clay figurines to celadon dishes, basins and other ceramic goods.

The ship also carried a cargo of spices, herbal medicines and lacquerware, reflecting the products and practices of the 14th century.

"The artifacts show the nature of the cultural exchanges between China, Japan and other Asian nations through trade. Visitors can see that the people in the 14th century enjoyed tea, flower and incense,... and that members of the upper-class especially liked celadon dishes and metalware."

But among the thousands of pieces in the collection, this celadon vase is one to admire.

It's similar to other pieces made for Chinese emperors, both in color and style.

The two handles are shaped like dragons that represent emperors,... and archaeologists say it would have been handled with great care.

The ship also had a large cargo of Goryeo celadon from the Korean kingdom in power at the time.

Archaeologists suggest the pieces, designed in the 13th century Goryeo style, had been sold in China and were going to be exchanged to Japan.

Many of the ceramics have engraved flower patterns, showing the exquisite techniques of the era.

Until now, the artifacts had been scattered at different museums around the country.

But the National Museum of Korea brought them together in what is the largest-ever display of Sinan artifacts.

It's also the museum's largest exhibition to date.

"I came here with my children to show the precious treasures our country has preserved. There are so many antiques, and I hope my children have learned a lot."

"Through the tiny details in each of the ceramic pieces, I was able to see what the culture and trends back then were like."

The museum and archaeologists hope that the exhibition will serve as a turning point for the future of underwater archaeology and shipwreck research in the country, as well as the preservation of Korea's ancient treasures.
