Title: N. Korea believed to have planted landmines in Panmunjeom
Amid a string of defections by North Koreans lately,.... it's emerged that North Korea may be trying to stop its own soldiers fleeing to the South by planting landmines near the inter-Korean border.
But, it seems there's really very little the regime can do to stop of the flow... today, we have confirmation of another defection case - this time, a defection case of three North Koreans by sea.
Our correspondent in charge of North Korean affairs, Connie Kim has our stop story tonight.
North Korea has reportedly planted anti-personnel mines on the inter-Korean border,... which some officials believe are meant to stop the regime's soldiers from deserting the regime.
Citing an unnamed government source,... Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency reported on Tuesday that mines were planted near the so-called "Bridge of No Return."
The bridge is located in the truce village of Panmunjeom, which spans the military demarcation line between the two Koreas, and was the site of a prisoner exchange that followed the armistice that ended hostilities in the Korean War in 1953.
Under that agreement, landmines cannot be planted nor can border guards be armed in the area around Panmunjeom.
The United Nations Command said it's aware of North Korea's activities in the vicinity of the bridge, but would not speculate as to why the North Korean People's Army is mining the area.
However, it also said it strongly condemns any actions that jeopardize the safety of personnel in the Demilitarized Zone.
A South Korean military official said he believes North Korea's actions are part of efforts to prevent soldiers on the frontline from fleeing to the South.
Sources say North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is likely concerned the soldiers will be influenced by South Korea's latest round of loudspeaker broadcasts at the border including the defection of North Korea's deputy ambassador to Britain.
Despite Pyongyang's efforts to stop its people from fleeing,… Seoul has confirmed yet another defection -- this time, three North Koreans who entered South Korea this month through waters near Incheon, on the west coast.
Intelligence authorities said Tuesday the North Koreans expressed their wish to defect when found onboard a fishing boat in South Korean territorial waters.
The North Koreans are under investigation by South Korea's National Intelligence Service,… but are believed to have embarked from China.
With so many recent defections,... eyes are on how North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will respond. Some experts have raised the prospect of retailiation by the North through more provocations.
Connie Kim, Arirang News.
That's right,... and South Korean officials have noted those provocations could come in the form of abductions or terror attacks on South Korean nationals abroad.
Today,... Seoul's foreign ministry issued a note of caution for South Koreans traveling or living overseas to be extra careful and avoid staying out alone especially after dark.
Title: N. Korea has produced more weapons-grade plutonium from main reactor: report
North Korea may have enough plutonium to make up to four more nuclear weapons than previous estimates.
The basis for this conclusion: Pyongyang's recent nuclear activity and the claims by the regime itself.
A U.S. security institute has released a report of its analysis on the North's most recent nuclear activities.
Concerns that Pyongyang could be readying itself for a fifth nuclear test are growing, as North Korea appears to have obtained more weapons-grade plutonium.
The U.S.-based Institute for Science and International Security said in a report that North Korea has managed to produce between five-point-five to eight kilograms of plutonium... by reprocessing nuclear fuel from its main reactor at its Yongbyon nuclear facility.
That amount of plutonium could be used to make between two to four nuclear weapons, when taking into account that two to four kilograms of plutonium is used in a single warhead.
If the North's stock of weapons-grade uranium is included,... the institute believes Pyongyang has enough material to make between 13 to 21 nuclear weapons, according to estimates up to this summer.
The think tank's report is in line with a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency on Friday... outlining its latest assertion that North Korea had resumed its reprocessing activities.
THAT report just came a day after Pyongyang confirmed it has resumed its production of weapons-grade plutonium,... through its Atomic Energy Institute.
Making note of the ISIS and IAEA's assessment,... South Korea's foreign ministry said Tuesday... it strongly condemns North Korea's nuclear development.
"Any activity related to North Korea's nuclear program,... including reprocessing,... violates UN Security Council resolutions. The government once again strongly urges North Korea to immediately halt its nuclear development."
"The foreign ministry's spokesperson said,... the issue is sure to be discussed at the upcoming trilateral foreign ministers' meeting between South Korea, Japan and China... in Tokyo on Wednesday,... as Pyongyang's nuclear and missile threats are expected to be high on the agenda.
Kwon Soa, Arirang News."
Title: Gov't considering Seongju country club for anti-missile battery
The latest on the ongoing debate on where to station the planned THAAD battery in South Korea.
Following a formal request by Seongju residents to the government to consider an alternate location for the missile defense system, various locations including a golf club in that county have emerged as potential candidates.
For that and more, here's Kim Hyunbin.
Sources have confirmed that Lotte Sky Hill Country Club in Seongju County is under consideration as an alternative location for the THAAD missile defense system, though the club hasn't publicly weighed in on the issue.
According to officials from the country club on Tuesday,... the defense ministry conducted an analysis of the course and found the area behind the golf course's first hole as a suitable location.
The officials, however, expressed concerns that if THAAD were deployed to the area... the club could lose nearly 40 percent of its customers.
Lotte has not yet issued a formal complaint.
The country club is located about 18 kilometers from the Seongju County Office and is far from populated areas.
Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun said on Tuesday that South Korea's political parties need to overcome their differences on the THAAD issue.
He called on parties to put aside ideology and their political differences to minimize public division.
Speaker Chung urged the National Assembly to come up with a long-term diplomatic and security strategy for peace and stability in Northeast Asia and on the Korean Peninsula.
The ruling Saenuri Party supports the deployment but some opposition parties oppose it, claiming it would hurt ties with Beijing and Moscow.
Kim Hyun-bin, Arirang News.
Title: Seoul condemns Tokyo's publishing of remarks distorting Japan's wartime sex slavery record
Japan's foreign ministry caused an uproar in Korea last weekend by publishing controversial remarks regarding Korean victims of Japan's wartime sex slavery system.
Seoul has responded... our Kim Jung-soo fills us in on the Korean government's response to what it describes as "an act that distorts history and backtracks efforts to heal wounds of the past."
The Korean government has issued an official response to claims by a Japanese politician distorting the history of Japan's wartime sexual enslavement of Korean women.
On Saturday, the Japanese Foreign Ministry website uploaded a statement by Deputy Minister Shinsuke Sugiyama, who argued, contrary to common belief, that Korean women willingly volunteered sexual services during World War II.
The remarks were made back in February, when Deputy Minister Sugiyama told a U.N. special committee that the "forceful taking away" of Korean women is not supported by any historical evidence.
Sugiyama even claimed the term "sex slaves" is counterfactual, implying the victims were prostitutes.
In response, Korean Foreign Ministry Spokesman Cho June-hyuck said Tuesday that victims of sex slavery had clearly been coerced, and emphasized that the historical veracity of those events has been confirmed by the interntional community at large.
Cho said the Japanese government should not try to change the past, but rather build from it in the best possible way.
"We hope our Japanese counterparts can cooperate with the Korean government in addressing the traumatic past, and build a path towards a future that can restore and heal the dignity of the victims."
One such ongoing effort is the setting up of a Korean foundation late last year to help the survivors of sexual slavery, with Japan offering a billion yen, or about 10 million U.S. dollars, in funding.
Kim Jung-soo, Arirang news.
Title: S. Korea-China-Japan meeting comes at "very important time": Seoul's Foreign Minister
Meanwhile, Seoul's foreign minister left for Tokyo today... to attend a trilateral meeting with his Japanese and Chinese counterparts on Wednesday.
As Minister Yun Byung-se boarded the Tokyo-bound plane, he noted that the talks are held at a "very important time" because it comes just days before a string of multilateral and bilateral summits for South Korea AND also at a time when the three countries are faced with various diplomatic challenges.
Japan and China are in a territorial dispute over a group of islands in the East China Sea and Seoul and Beijing face disagreements on South Korea's decision to deploy a U.S. missile defense system to the Korean peninsula.
Title: Seoul, Beijing mark 24 years of diplomatic ties
Seoul and Beijing MAY be stuck in a diplomatic and defense-related issues at the moment, but in many other areas the two countries have seen their partnership make huge advancements in the last 24 years.
Our Hwang Ji-hye takes a look at the past, present, and future of the bilateral ties - she files this report from Shanghai.
At this duty free shop in Seoul,... seven out of 10 customers are Chinese,...who are avid fans of South Korean cosmetics. So it comes as no surprise there is a whole floor dedicated to these best-selling items.
"Korean cosmetics are really nice. They are easy to use, and for the price, the quality is really good as well."
The growing influx of Chinese tourists has certainly opened new growth opportunities for the domestic service and tourism sectors, to mention a few.
But it's not just within the local market that South Korean businesses are striving.
Over in China,... South Korean firms are bolstering efforts to penetrate the market, using the Korean wave, or hallyu as a firm foothold.
"To take advantage of the growing demand in this market of 1-point-3 billion, roughly 20-thousand Korean companies are doing business here in China."
South Korea is also a crucial economic partner for China due to a tight-knit web of production.
Seoul exports intermediary goods to the neighboring market, which are then used to produce final products.
With that, Korea is China's largest source of imports.
While much emphasis has been put on cultivating economic ties between Seoul and Beijing since relations were established more than two decades ago..., the need for a stronger strategic partnership is also gaining greater attention than ever due to the ongoing military provocations from Pyongyang.
But Seoul's decision last month to deploy the U.S. missile defense system THAAD to the Korean peninsula has put a dent in the South Korea-China partnership, heightening concerns that the issue could even have an impact on bilateral economic ties.
It's now the time for South Korea to really focus on public diplomacy with the Chinese people. If we continue to see hostility between the two countries, it will be hard to mend ties."
Experts point out that Seoul should work to keep the steady stream of cultural exchanges with Beijing alive in order to build on the 24 years that the two nations have already cemented.

Title: Political parties wrangle over dual issue of budget bill and hearing witness list
In Korea's parliament...
political parties remain deadlocked over the government's fiscal policy decision including a proposed budget supplement.
Park Ji-won reports from the National Assembly.
The ruling Saenuri Party reiterated Tuesday that it wants the budget bill passed as soon as possible,... so the budget can have the maximum effect on the economy in the second half of the year.
"Our predecessor, the Grand National Party, never stopped the passage of a supplementary budget bill... when the opposition was the ruling party during the Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun administrations. The 20th National Assembly, which should be serving the public's desire for a productive parliament, should not be doing this."
The main opposition Minjoo Party is firm in its stance that it cannot approve the budget until the ruling party agrees to call key economic policymakers, including former Finance Minister Choi Kyung-whan, to two parliamentary hearings on the fiscal policy decisions that later made the budget supplement necessary.
Those decisions,... allegedly made at a secret meeting last year,... involved injecting 3-point-8 billion dollars in state funds... to prevent the already ailing Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering... from becoming insolvent.
On Tuesday, opposition lawmakers in the two standing committees in charge of the hearings... called on the ruling party to compromise on the witness list.
"We're not aiming to put anyone to shame. The hearings are designed to diagnose the shipbuilding industry's insolvency and prevent another failure. Only then can the supplementary budget be executed meaningfully."
The People's Party agreed the hearings should be used to review the decision-making process,... so that taxpayer money won't ever be wasted again.
"The government has so far injected some 10-billion U.S. dollars into Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, but we're wondering whether the company won't follow in the footsteps of STX Shipbuilding, which was put under court receivership. There is a growing risk of privatizing profits while socializing losses."
"Despite the ongoing debate between the parties, lawmakers say... they'd like to see a breakthrough by the end of the week... in order to take advantage of what is regarded as the best time to implement the budget supplement.
Park Ji-won, Arirang News."
Title: Prosecution to launch investigation into two to gov't officials
For the first time in the country's prosecution history, a special investigation team will be formed to simultaneously probe two high-profile government figures over what began as allegations of corruption.
One, a senior presidential secretary on bribery charges; the other, the very inspector who had been probing the presidential secretary. The inspector - for allegedly leaking information on an on-going case.
An unprecedented case for the prosecutuion, our Ji Myung-kil reports.
The Supreme Prosecutors' Office said Tuesday that a special investigation team will look into series of allegations involving two top government officials at the same time.
This will be the first time in Korea's prosecution history that two high-profile figures will be probed simultaneously.
The prosecution is expected to summon Woo Byung-woo, the senior presidential secretary for civil affairs, and special inspector Lee Seok-su, who was heading a probe into Woo.
The senior presidential aide is suspected of having exerted influence in helping his son get special treatment in his mandatory military service, while his family members are alleged to have used the company's public funds for living expenses.
Woo still remains in his position despite calls for his resignation.
Meanwhile inspector Lee also came under fire for allegedly leaking information of Woo's on-going case to the media.
"Didn't the prosecution say it will look into the info leakage case? It's not right for me to talk about the on-going probe, so I will give details when I get summoned by the prosecution."
Lee's action was strongly criticized by the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae, deeming Lee's behavior, if verified, as a grave violation of the law.
Lee was appointed by President Park Geun-hye as the first independent inspector last year to mainly deal with corruption cases involving the President's relatives and aides.
Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News.
Title: Seoul prosecutors to summon close aide of Lotte Group chairman
Prosecutors are edging closer to answers in an ongoing investigation into allegations of slush funds and business irregularities by Korea's fifth largest conglomerate -- Lotte Group.
They now plan to summon a top executive of the group's control tower -- which oversees policy matters of the conglomerate.
Kim Min-ji gives us an update.
Seoul prosecutors will summon a top executive at Lotte Group's control tower this coming Thursday.
Hwang Gak-gyu,... the head of the group's policy coordination bureau,... is known as one of the closest aides to Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin.
Prosecutors plan to question Hwang on allegations the group amassed slush funds,... as well as charges of embezzlement, tax evasion... and illegal internal transactions.
This builds on the probe into the group launched in June -- with prosecutors having already called key executives of the group's business arms in for questioning on the allegations.
The focal point of the investigation has been on Lotte Chemical -- also known as the group's biggest earner.
The company is suspected of using another Lotte arm in Japan and inflating prices during transactions,... and then transferring those funds back to the Japanese unit,... or creating slush funds.
Two of the group's resorts are also under investigation,... as the land was purchased for tens of billion of dollars,... but Hotel Lotte bought the facilities for much less in an M&A deal.
On top of that,... Lotte Group founder Shin Kyuk-ho is suspected of dodging taxes worth about 540 million U.S. dollars.
Prosecutors plan to bring in more close aides for questioning later in the week.

Title: Seoul Metro holds counterterrorism drill at Seoul's Sindorim station
As part of the ongoing Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise,... police, firefighters, and soldiers held a counterterrorism drill this afternoon at a subway station in Seoul. The scenario was designed to simulate conditions as close as possible to those of a real attack.
Our Oh Jung-hee takes us through this intense exercise.
A terrorist runs through a subway car, screaming and assaulting the passengers.
His bomb explodes, filling the train with smoke and knocking out the lights.
The emergency systems kick in and the train comes to a stop.
This counterterrorism training operation was held at 2 p.m. today... as part of the ongoing Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise.
ed: mark
"One-hundred-40 officials from the army, fire and police departments and district offices are taking part in this one-hour drill at Sindorim Station on Seoul's busy subway line 2 .
The training assumes a mock situation where a terrorist bombs a moving train."
As the safety doors open, passengers covering their noses and mouths evacuate the train and help others in the process.
The police arrive on the scene and capture the terrorist... as firefighters put out the flames and carry away the injured.
A group of soldiers search the train for any remaining bombs while others guard the platform and nearby areas.
The training ends as metro crews get the train back online and finally announce the all-clear.
The detailed roleplay, with its artificial smoke and emergency announcements, makes for a tense atmosphere in the underground facility.
"Today's drill is to boost cooperation among related agencies and enhance quick response capabilities in the event of a terror attack on the subway."
The realism of the training was amplified this year amid public concern over the threat of terrorism and the fact that an attack on the subway could cause massive casualties.

Title: S. Korea reports first cholera patient in 15 years
The unusually high temperatures and for such a long time in Korea are creating a favorable environment for bacterial growth in food... water... whatever that we consume.
Cases of food poisoning have been reported here in this country and for the first time in 15 years, a case of cholera.
Our Lee Minyoung has the do's and don'ts of this hot, humid season.
Korea has confirmed its first case of cholera in 15 years,...putting local health authorities on emergency alert.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention announced on Tuesday....that a 59-year-old man living in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do Province, has been confirmed to have been infected with the disease.
The KCDC is currently conducting an epidemiologic investigation into the patient to look into the ways he could have contracted the highly contagious disease.
Since he has no records of travelling abroad this year, local authorities are assuming he might have contracted cholera in the country.
korean
"This is a strange case because cholera has never occurred naturally within the country. In the past, cholera outbreaks were caused by visitors from overseas already infected with the bacteria. Since cholera is transmitted through contaminated food or water, there is a good chance that the patient got infected by eating raw seafood."
The KCDC also said the continued heatwave could have contributed for the bacteria to thrive a long period of time.
"Sea surface temperatures have significantly risen due to the sweltering weather conditions as of late,...providing an optimal environment for the cholera bacterium to multiply and contaminate the fish."
The disease has a latent period of two to three days,... and common symptoms include severe diarrhea and dehydration, and if not treated promptly, seizures, coma, and even death.
Experts say thoroughly cooking or boiling food and water is a way to prevent getting infected cholera, as well as general sanitation and personal hygiene.

Title: Asian-Americans' rising influence in U.S. Presidential election
With less than 80 days before Americans choose their next president,… there's still plenty of time for movement in the polls.
In some swing states, one crucial voting bloc could be Asian-Americans, a group whose influence is rising.
Shin Se-min reports.
Determining who becomes the next President of the United States isn't as simple as liberal versus conservative.
Amid the underlying realities of ethnicity in America, the Democrats are getting a competitive edge from a particularly fast-growing group -- Asian-Americans.
Although Asian-Americans have relatively little influence on the election numerically, they are the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S,… accounting for more than 9-million eligible voters in this election cycle,… up 16 percent from four years ago.
Asian-Americans also earn the most money of any major group and have the highest level of education,… factors traditionally correlated with high voter turnout.
Though they represent only about 4-percent of eligible voters,... their influence in some of the key battleground states is significantly greater than that.
In California, Asian-Americans make up nearly 15-percent of the electorate; and that's 9-percent in Nevada, 7 in New Jersey, and six-point-three percent in New York.
But the growing influence of Asian voters doesn't necessarily help the Republican Party.
A survey earlier this year by the Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote project found that 61-percent of the Asian-American registered voters held an unfavorable view of Republican Donald Trump,… while a similar proportion held a favorable view of his rival, Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Some observers say the Republican Party should be wary of alienating the group as the influence of Asian-Americans is expected to rise in the long-term.
A Pew Research Center study shows that in less than half a century, Asians will outnumber Hispanics among all new immigrants.

Title: Olympic golf champion Park Inbee returns home from Rio
Golfer Park Inbee who won Olympic gold for Korea despite suffering from injuries... was mobbed by fans, reporters and her family as she landed in home soil.
Hwang Hojun takes us to Incheon International Airport.
Korea's newly-crowned Olympic golf champion Park Inbee is back on home soil after her gold-medal winning performance in Rio.
The 24-hour plus flight was not enough to dampen Park's emotion of doing her country so proud.
"This was probably the first time I've competed for my country rather than my own personal glory. When I heard the national anthem on the 18th hole,... it was -- without a doubt -- the best music I've ever heard in my life."
Reporters and photographers swarmed the arrivals gate, determined to get a view of the triumphant champion.
Among the crowd was Park's grandfather, who was shedding tears of joy and pride.
"My granddaughter has become the daughter of Korea. I couldn't be happier."
Park was originally scheduled to return with the rest of the national team on Wednesday.
But the thumb injury she has been battling all year, prompted her to leave Rio a day earlier than originally planned.
The 28-year-old, dubbed the empress of golf in Korea, has now accomplished what's being called a "career golden slam", winning seven majors and an Olympic gold.
The medal carries extra significance as golf returned to the Olympics this year after an absence of 116 years.
And this might not be the end of the golden story, as Park also said she's willing to compete again in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics if she gets the chance.
Meanwhile, a homecoming ceremony that will officially disband Korea's 2016 Olympic national team will be held at Incheon International Airport on Wednesday morning, shortly after the rest of the squad returns from Rio.

Title: K-pop meets virtual reality
Listening to your favorite song, or better said, going to your favorite singer's concert, is a concept that usually implies purchasing tickets, waiting in line, and probably get crushed by other fans. Well, it seems like that idea could soon become a thing of the past as Korea's music and ICT industries are taking things to the next level thanks to virtual reality.
Our Kim Ji-yeon reports.
Lights, camera, action
The amount of time it took to say that is how long it could take you to enjoy a K-pop concert in the future... without the hassle of finding the time, money and effort to actually go to one.
That's thanks to new services like KT Music's Genie VR, which provides 360-degree videos of live performances, showcases and music videos of local artists.
During a K-pop performance like this showcase of Korean band the Nine Muses, five to six cameras simultaneously film the stage from all angles... and then the footage is stitched together in real time... for users with VR headsets... through an ultra-high-speed internet connection.
"We've always been interested in trying to find new content to integrate with IT. We believe VR could help the company create a new market in the content industry,... building on our success and experience with Internet Protocol Television."
KT, the country's leading telecommunications operator,... has more than 6-point-8-million subscribers to its IPTV service,... a method of distributing its TV content via the internet... that is designed to give users a more customized and interactive experience.
Similarly, the company thought it could increase the number of subscribers to its Genie VR service by adding pop culture content... and get ahead of the VR and Augmented Reality market, which is projected to grow from the current 2-point-2-billion U.S. dollars... to 95-billion dollars by 2025, according to data from Goldman Sachs.
"KT Music's Genie VR service currently has around 50-thousand users,... nowhere near enough to signify that people might prefer virtual concerts over live ones. But that could change with further advancements in VR technology."
A local music label and production company says the way we tune in to music could forever change in the coming years,... when people will be able to use VR devices to not only enjoy live performances in their living rooms... but also to learn how to dance and play their favorite songs with holograms of K-pop stars.
The label says the current VR phase is a stepping stone toward achieving the ultimate goal of creating interactive content in the AR phase, in which three-dimensional virtual elements can be superimposed on images of reality.
"Most fans are captivated by the VR content of live performances... by being able to be in the shoes of their favorite artists when they're performing. Some critics of VR content say, however, that it's harder to concentrate on the music itself. For us, I think the current initial VR phase is a great trial-and-error period to get rid of some of those barriers and ultimately promote VR content to the masses."
The CEO says the company plans to produce VR content in order to make fans of its artists more familiar with the technology... to prepare for a future in which every household is equipped with VR devices, which will become as much of a fixture in living rooms as TV sets are today.
Kim Ji-yeon, Arirang News.
Title: Sizzling heat in many parts of the country expected through Thursday
We're nearing the end of August but the blistering heat just doesn't want to go. For more on the weather updates, let's head over to our Lee Jeehyun at the weather center. Jee-hyun, we had some welcome rain in the capital this afternoon but that didn't seem to cool us down much.
No, it didn't. And ironically, according to East Asian calendars, today is Cheoseo, which is meant to signal the end of the summer heat and the start of cooler autumn weather.
So far this summer, the capital has seen 24 days classified as heatwave days... when temperatures remained above 33 degrees Celsius. That's the most since 1994. But the number could still rise, with the extraordinarily hot weather forecast to continue 'till Thursday.
The weather agency expects things to cool off starting Friday. So 'till then we'll stay in the mid-thirties. And those tropical nighttime temps will continue as well, putting Summer 2016 on course to be an unforgettable one indeed.
Despite a little relief thanks to the pop-up showers today, heatwave alerts remain in place across the much of the country. Tomorrow will be a blistering day with a sporadic showers in some of the inland regions and Jeju Island.
And now, let's take a closer look at the readings for tomorrow.
Seoul, Busan and Jeju will start out at 25 degrees Celsius.
As for the highs,
