Title: Bilateral talks set for President Park during EEF, G20, ASEAN Summits
President Park Geun-hye embarks on an eight-day trip to Russia and China tomorrow.
The top office announced her itinerary today: she will be sitting down her U.S., Russia, and Chinese counterparts during the trip. Many had been keeping a keen eye on the prospects of a Seoul, Beijing summit... as it will be the first time for the two leaders to meet since South Korea announced the decision to deploy THAAD to the Korean peninsula.
Now, the president's key focus at the multilateral summits and one-on-one talks with world leaders will remain, the economy and security issues.
Our presidential office correspondent Song Ji-sun reports.
President Park's trip begins in Vladivostok where she'll attend the Eastern Economic Forum.
Park will deliver a speech as the guest of honor, at the event hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at fostering development and growth in the Far East.
Seeking to jointly counter North Korea's growing nuclear threat will be one item on the agenda during bilateral talks with Putin.
At her next stop, the G20 in Hangzhou, China, she'll hold a sideline summit with the President of the host country, Xi Jinping. President Park will likely call on Beijing to play a greater role in pressuring Pyongyang on its nuclear ambitions, and try to bring China closer to Seoul's position on the deployment of the U.S. THAAD missile defense system to counter those threats.
"The presidential visit is aimed at boosting the potential for economic growth, while strengthening cooperation with the international community in denuclearizing North Korea by implementing UN Security Council resolutions."
A series of bilateral talks with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Italy is also scheduled during the G20 Summit. At this year's meeting, where 'inclusive growth' is the key phrase, Park will promote Seoul's innovation drive as a new model for global growth.
"President Park will propose Seoul's creative economy as a model for an innovative, inclusive economy to contribute to the G20's future growth, while also calling for a greater role for the member countries in promoting free trade against recent protectionism."
At her last stop, the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos, Park will seek to lay the foundations for greater trade and investment with the massive economic bloc.
President Park will sit down with U.S. President Barack Obama,... while talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are also being arranged.
"In a series of bilateral and multilateral summits, President Park will repeat her call for world leaders to guide Pyongyang to the right choice... by sending a strong message through the implementation of international sanctions.
Song Ji-sun, Arirang News."
Title: China gets ready to host its first G20 summit
With China gearing up to host its first G20 summit, Beijing is determined to make the event a success.
That involves shutting down factories and tightening security.
Hwang Ji-hye files this report from Hangzhou.
Hangzhou, located two hours away by car from Shanghai, is a city renowned... for being one of China's seven ancient capitals.
It boasts its picturesque natural scenery... like here at the West Lake.
But the city is not just about scenic attractions.
It's also home to the headquarters of Alibaba, China's biggest e-commerce company.
The local GDP ranks tenth among all of the country's 600-plus cities.
And this week... Hangzhou will bring together leaders from around the world for the G20 Summit.
Through this event, China hopes to put on display its rise as a global power... by successfully seeing through the international gathering without a hitch.
"Security checks are extremely heavy here in Hangzhou in eastern China ahead of the G20 summit set to take place in early September.
Security guards and police officers are seen every five to ten meters around this Olympic Sports Center where the meeting will take place."
A drive around the city shows eerily empty but pristine streets... ready to greet visitors.
Factories are closed,... for the first seven days of the month... designated a temporary holiday by the government for local residents.
This is all to make sure the city is free of safety risks.
Although a disruption to people's everyday lives... we found most enduring with pride.
"It's for safety reasons, and the event also brings vitality to the country. I can understand."
"I support the event taking place here, so it's okay."
"It's really nice that the event raised our reputation locally and internationally. Residents here are glad that Hangzhou is hosting the G20. We hope to see more of these events."
Only a couple of days now remain until the event.
During the annual meeting, world leaders from 20 different countries as well as leaders from global organizations like the UN and the IMF will discuss issues centering on low growth woes threatening the world economy.... in hopes of finding a common solution.
Hwang Ji-hye, Arirang News, Hangzhou.
Title: S. Korea asesses UNSC resolution on N. Korea has shown results
It's been half a year since the strongest ever sanctions on North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations were adopted by the United Nations Security Council.
Today, the Seoul government evaluated the implementation process so far... saying although we are seeing tangible results... we are still ways away from witnessing the Kim regime abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Kwon Soa reports.
The UN Security Council adopted resolution 2270 back in March,... as a result of North Korea's fourth nuclear test in January,... and following missile tests.
The resolution imposed the strongest sanctions to date on the regime, but have they brought the expected results?
Seoul's Foreign Ministry assessed Thursday,... that UN members have over the course of the last six months actively cooperated in modifying legal and institutional matters domestically, for an effective implementation of resolution.
"The South Korean government evaluates that the UN Security Council's sanctions imposed on North Korea are producing results,... due to the combined effects of key countries' independent sanctions and the overall international community's pressure on North Korea."
An official at the ministry told reporters on the same day,... that 53 UN member states have submitted their implementation reports to the UNSC,... and many more are preparing to follow suit.
Examples of individual efforts listed by officials are Beijing's closing of Chinese branches of North Korean banks,... Angola's suspending of commercial trade with Pyongyang,... and Jordan's revoking rights to North Korean ships to operate under its flag of convenience.
The flag of convenience system allows ships to register under a third country.
"South Korea's Foreign Ministry views the recent developments as a clear sign it's North Korea… versus the international community."
However,... some say,... the sanctions have their limits in making North Korea give up its nuclear ambitions.
"On the economic front it'll be difficult to see long-lasting results. But, the resolution is meaningful in that the international community leaves a good precedent through imposing sanctions, whenever Pyongyang violates international obligations."
To better observe and analyze the implementation of the resolution,... Seoul's foreign ministry recently launched a special control team that'll work with related ministries and spur international efforts to put more pressure on North Korea.
Kwon Soa, Arirang News.
Title: Parliament fails to ratify US$ 9.8 bil. budget supplement on Thursday
Korea's rival parties failed to approve the budget supplement intended to breathe new life into Korea's stagnant economy.
The planned vote broke down after a contentious speech by Speaker of the National Assembly.
Ji Myung-kil fills us in on their regular session which got off to an unproductive start.
The ruling Saenuri Party was furious over the content of Thursday's parliamentary address by National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun.
"It's hard to tell whether he's the Speaker of the National Assembly or someone affiliated with a biased pressure group. The Speaker is responsible for today's failure to vote on the hard-won extra budget bill. He's not qualified to be Korea's Assembly Speaker."
Speaker Chung had touched on sensitive political issues, urging the scandal-ridden senior presidential secretary for civil affairs Woo Byung-woo to resign. He also voiced his opposition to the deployment of U.S. anti-missile system THAAD.
"There's some difficulties in agreeing that the governments attitude towards THAAD stands on the same line as being our leading countermeasure against the North."
Korea's National Assembly Speaker is required to leave aside his party affiliation when carrying out his duties. The ruling party said Speaker Chung had violated that rule.
Therefore, the ruling party adopted a resolution calling on Speaker Chung to step down from his post.
Meanwhile, the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea accused the Saenuri Party for using the speaker's address as an excuse to boycott the plenary session,... calling it a well-calculated political motive to disrupt the passage of the budget supplement.
After days of marathon talks over the 9-point-8 billion dollars in extra spending,... the rival parties had agreed to vote on the bill on Thursday.
"As for next year's budget, it is uncertain when the relevant parliamentary committees will start reviewing the spending plan worth 360 billion dollars... as the National Assembly needs to finalize the bill by December 2nd.
Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News."

Title: Korea's exports rise for first time in 20 months
Korea's exports have finally made a turnaround,... snapping a record 19 straight months of decline.
Many of the nation's key export products showed positive growth -- including semiconductors and petrochemicals. What could very well be the start of a new momentum for the country's exports... or is it?
Our Kim Minji reports. It's a rise for the first time in 20 months.
The trade ministry says Korea's outbound shipments rose an estimated 2-point-6 percent in August from a year earlier to 40-point-1 billion U.S. dollars.
After falling for 19 straight months since January of last year,... the turnaround provides a glint of light for the country's exports -- once the economy's main pillar.
"We saw a rise in the number of work days. Also, the strongest performance this year in chips and petrochemicals, which are part of the eight key export items that saw growth. Unit prices also shifted to positive gains of 6-point-1 percent."
In terms of the country's 13 key export items, outbound shipments edged up 1-point-7 percent last month from a year ago,... in stark contrast to the 12 percent fall in July.
Exports of semiconductors,... petrochemical products and flat panel displays also hit their highest monthly value so far this year.
Imports also rose -- just slightly, but for the first time in nearly two years.
Inbound shipments edged up 0-point-1 percent to 34-point-8 billion dollars.
That means a trade surplus of 5-point-3 billion,... extending the surplus streak for a 55th straight month.
While expected improvements in unit prices and volume for key items paint a rosy picture for the latter half of the year,... downside risks do linger.
"An interest rate hike in the U.S. could trigger capital outflow in emerging markets. That's a concern as those countries make up about 60 percent of Korea's total exports. A prolonged strike in the country's auto industry will also put a dent in outbound shipments. On top of that,... global demand still remains sluggish with more countries turning to protectionism."
In light of those uncertainties,... experts say Korean firms need to make continued efforts to bolster their competitiveness.
To do that, they advise companies to keep investing in R&D to create new products and boost their brand image. They're also advised to make use of free trade deals and... Hallyu, or the Korean Wave,... to keep exports growing.
Kim Min-ji, Arirang News.
Title: Korea's food exporters have strong market in Russia's far east
Speaking of exports...
Korea is always on the lookout for new markets for its food exports.
One such market is far eastern Russia.
And it helps that the region is home to people already well accustomed to Korean cuisine and culture.
Kim Hyun-bin files this report from Vladivostok.
Since taking office as president for the first time at the turn of the century, Vladimir Putin has made it his goal to transform Vladivostok into the unofficial eastern capital of Russia.
However, even to this day, Vladivostok remains virtually untouched by foreign influence, especially compared to other global cities.
"There's not a single Starbucks or McDonalds here in Vladivostok, but you might be surprised to learn that most stores here carry Korean food products, everything from kimchi to ramyeon noodles."
Many Korean companies are exporting their top-selling products to the city and some are even tweaking the taste to better fit Russian taste buds.
"The most popular products are ramyeon noodles, followed by Korean cookies. Other Korean snacks also sell well. Many Russians also like to incorporate Korean sauces into their traditional meals."
Korea has traded with Vladivostok and the rest of Russia's far east for centuries. Local residents have grown up with Korean products so they are more open to Korean food and flavors than other parts of Russia.
"Korean food is really popular in this region for two reasons. First, we are so close to South Korea. Second, there are lots of ethnically-Korean Russians here and they like to stick to their heritage."
The Korea Trade Investment and Promotion Agency, which has an office in Vladivostok, says Korean food exports to the city and its surrounding areas have increased sharply over the past five years.
It says the forecast in the coming years is bright as well, as the Russian ruble has become more stable after a turbulent few years.
Kim Hyun-bin, Arirang News, Vladivostok.
Title: Hanjin Shipping pandemoneum shocks global trade market
The collapse of Korea's Hanjin Shipping is sending ripples though global trade... as the country's largest port turned away its ships and as some manufacturers scrambled for freight alternatives.
Hwang Ho-jun has more on how the repercussions are being felt around the world.
Less than 24 hours since the trade giant of Korea filed for bankruptcy protection... and the news has shocked the global trade market.
Ports around the world, including those in China, Spain, and the U.S. have denied access to Hanjin ships over fears that Hanjin's creditors could seize the cargo vessels before they dock,... not to mention the ships potentially not being able to pay their fees.
In fact, a smaller-sized Hanjin vessel, the Hanjin Rome, was seized by a creditor in Singapore late on Monday.
Experts say more docks around the world will follow suit.
The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. exporters are jostling to rebook containers with other carriers to reload their cargos, ahead of the retail boom that accompanies Thanksgiving, Hannuka and Christmas.
Hanjin Shipping has halted its operations, and with global market share of 2-point-9 percent, the drop in tonnage will likely lead to sky-rocketing costs.
"Shipping companies have a lot of customers outside of Korea. So Hanjin's case is rather a global public concern with a greater impact than other companies."
A Korean court will determine as early this week whether Hanjin should be liquidated or given a chance to restructure and possibly survive.

Title: ) Shin Dong-joo being questioned for wrongfully receiving US$ 36 mil. in wage
Six days after a top executive of the scandal-ridden Lotte Group was found dead in an apparent suicide, prosecutors of this country resumed their investigation and summoned the former vice chairman of Lotte Holdings, Japan, Shin Dong-joo.
He is also the oldest son of the Lotte founding family.
Kim Hyesung has the details.
Korea's Supreme Prosecutors' Office summoned on Thursday former vice chairman of Lotte Holdings in Japan, Shin Dong-joo, for questioning over embezzlement and corruption allegations.
Shin, the eldest son of the Lotte founding family, is accused of embezzlement and receiving more than 35 million U.S. dollars in allegedly unearned wages over ten years from the group's business units, including Lotte Engineering and Construction, Lotte Hotel and other family firms.
Prosecutors are also expected to question Shin over Lotte Group's allegations on illegal financial transactions among Lotte businesses and tax evasion.
The founder of Lotte Group, Shin Kyuk-ho, is suspected of evading around 540 million dollars of taxes while transferring Japan Lotte Holding's stakes to his third wife and daughter.
Prosecutors believe his eldest son Shin Dong-joo has knowledge on Lotte Group's management details before being ousted from the board of Lotte Holdings last December after a power struggle with his younger brother Shin Dong-bin, who is expected to be summoned next by prosecutors within this month.
Shin Dong-joo is the second member of the founding family to be summoned after Shin Young-ja, his older sister, was indicted on charges of embezzlement in July.

Title: KCDC confirms all 3 Cholera victims infected by identical bacteria
Korea confirmed the third case of cholera in the last 24 hours... and latest findings have concluded that all three Cholera patients were infected by the same kind of bacteria.
Now, that will make it easier for the health authorities to trace and analyze the outbreak.
Our Kim Jung-soo has more.
The Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have verified on Thursday that the three Cholera victims recently connected to the city of Geoje, Gyeonsangnamdo province were infected by a genetically-identical bacteria.
The results of a genetic fingerprinting test also show that this bacteria is different from past Cholera-toxins that have historically affected the country.
Because of this, officials say they are looking into the possibility that the new bacteria may have been introduced through foreign channels.
The third and most recent patient, a 63-year old man, had shown symptoms of diarrhea beginning August 21st, after consuming squid and sardines purchased from a fish-market in Geoje city.
His illness was confirmed as Cholera on August 30th.
The control center had observed the first case of Cholera-infection this year around August 10th, when a native of Gwangju who had just returned from a trip to Geoje complained of extreme vomiting and dehydration.
His illness was finally identified as Cholera on August 22nd .
The second Cholera victim meanwhile was a native resident of Geoje.
She started experiencing related symptoms on August 15th, and was diagnosed with Cholera on August 25th.
According to the center, this recent Cholera outbreak is the first in over 15 years.
Korea has had a series of significant cholera outbreaks over the years.
In 2001, there were 162 individuals infected with Cholera, with most occurrences concentrated in the Gyeongsang Province.
There were 145 infected people in 1980, 113 in 1991, and 68 in 1995.
The control center has stressed that the outbreak must be monitored with utmost care.
"So far, over 100 people have reported symptoms of diarrhea in Geoje city alone."
And in response to the recent test-results, the center has also said it will strengthen tests analyzing the waters of Geoje-city to find the exact cause of the outbreak.

Title: Brazil Pres. Rousseff impeached, Temer sworn in as new leader
Capping eight months of a political thriller that has both transfixed and paralyzed Brazil's ruling class, Dilma Rousseff was impeached and removed from office Wednesday after a historic vote in the Brazilian Senate.
Three hours after the nation's first female president was officially ousted, Michel Temer, the 75-year-old vice president who was also a political rival of Rousseff, was sworn in to replace her.
Lee Unshin has a recap of Dilma Rousseff's fall from grace and Michel Temer's rise to power.
The Senate vote removed Brazil's first female president from office, effective immediately.
Brazilian senators voted 61 to 20 to dismiss Dilma Rousseff, who was suspended back in May.
Rousseff's vice president, Michel Temer , has taken her place, set to serve until the next elections in 2018.
As he assumed his role, Temer spoke to the nation, addressing the current economic troubles the country faces.
"We have received a country mired in a severe economic crisis: there are almost 12 million people unemployed, and a deficit of over 170 billion in our current accounts.
My commitment is to recover the strength of our economy and put Brazil back on track."
Temer's plans regarding economic growth, include a focus on administrative efficiency as well as job creation and social programs.
He also emphasized the importance of assuring political stability and legal security for international business owners and investors...to enlarge Brazil's global business opportunities.
Meanwhile, the now-ex-president Rousseff responded to her impeachment, saying there was no constitutional justification for it. She was ousted for illegally tampering with the budget two years ago to hide a growing deficit in order to win re-election.
Though the Senate's decision was a major blow for Rousseff, it may not mark the end of her political career. A motion to bar her from holding any public office for the next eight years, failed to pass.

Title: Korea's Olympic Champion: Taekwondo Gold Medalist Oh Hye-ri
At 28 years of age, she is now the oldest taekwondo medalist representing Korea. Proving third time is the charm, she proudly put the gold around her neck at her first ever Olympic Games, but her third try overall.
Oh Hye-ri, the 2016 Olympic champion in women's under 67 kilogram taekwondo - she's back on Korean soil after a surreal experience in Rio and I went to meet her myself. cg
Hello, Oh Hye-ri.
It's really good to see you.
Likewise.
Wow, you're much taller in person.
Oh, no.
So, this is the Korea National Training Center.
Yes, this is it. This is where I train, it's where I live.
I feel much more at ease since I've permanently been based here since last year.
You feel at home.
Yes, I've gotten used to this place.
CG
This is where I train when I'm at the training center. It's where I spend the most amount of time - like the living room in a house.
Inside the octagonal court .
We trained in this court to prepare for any kind of unexpected variables or situations that could arise at the Olympics.
The Olympics taekwondo team trained here together and polished our strategic moves.
In other words, our five Olympic medals come from here.
: .. .. 5
Courtesy of Oh Hye-ri
Leading up to the Rio Games, we even practiced with loud music in the background to simulate the actual match as closely as possible.
I also remember coming here at night when no one else is around and train by myself.
I still remember the feeling accomplishment and the cool breeze on my way back to the dorm after a long workout alone.
: . . . … … …. .
What does the Korea National Training Center mean to you?
: ? ?
First of all, it's where only the select few can enter. It's also where I was able to achieve my dream.
: . .. .
It's really hard to make it to the national team and join the national training center. Once you make it to the national team, the training that follows is even harder.
The good part is there's a lot of support for us to get trained in an optimal environment. The training was tough last year, but I've managed to enjoy every season as they taught me to overcome hardships. And time really flew by Before I knew it, it was time to go to Rio
After winning the gold
I expected you to burst into tears after winning the gold medal round. But, you smiled all the way through looking very confident. You were really enjoying the moment. How did you feel?
You are absolutely right. Like you said, I was just very happy. That's strange because I usually cry when I watch other people compete. Before the match, I met Korean residents in Brazil. They said they hoped to hear the Korean national anthem at the Rio Games. I promised them I'd do my best to make that happen. In hindsight, it's still strange for me that I didn't cry after the finals, I think it was just joy that I felt. I was happy knowing that I've done my best without regrets.
You went to the Beijing Olympics as a training partner of Olympic champion Hwang Kyung-sun. How was that experience?
I don't have sad memories of then. I learned a lot from that experience. Had I not experienced being in the shoes of failing to make it to the Olympics but going as a training partner, I would have never come this far. I learned a lot from being on both sides. Both competing in the Olympics and becoming an Olympic champion and helping someone as a training partner.
This is where athletes at the Korea National Training Center undergo weight training. If the taekwondo gym can be compared to the living room, this would be the parlor.
This is the Wall of Fame of all Korean Olympic medalists. I remember running on the treadmill picturing my photo up on the wall. I can't believe it's really happened.
Do you have the gold medal from the Rio Olympics with you? It's very heavy
It is. It feels heavier than three medals together. I think this one is so heavy because it is the hardest of to earn. It's as if the weight of the Olympics is embodied in this single medal.
MCY: So these are reserved for Rio, Pyeongchang and Tokyo, right?
MCY: I wish you all the best and will keep my hopes up that we will see your photo on that very end of the wall in four years' time.
OHR: I sure will do my best.
OHR: If you've worked hard for the Olympics, it's easy to feel lost when it's over. But for us, once Olympics are over, a series of competitions remain. Right now my plan is to focus on training for the 97th National Sports Festival in September and the Grand Final in October. And then there's the World Championships, and in no time, I'm sure the Asian Games will be upon me.
MCY: And... even beyond.
OHR:Yes, even beyond because I'm 25 at heart.

Title: Trump promises 'extreme vetting' on immigration
Donald Trump promises there will be 'no amnesty' for undocumented immigrants,… if he becomes the next president of the U.S.. I'm joined in the studio by Barry Welsh for World News. Trump vowed to deport millions of 'illegal aliens' upon entering the White House.
Trump made the comments during a major speech in the border state of Arizona.
There had been hints that the Trump campaign was softening its stance on immigration. This proved not to be the case with Trump using the speech in Phoenix to emphatically restate his ultra hard-line position. He promised to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and reverse policies of the Obama administration that helped young immigrants gain citizenship.
"There will be no amnesty. Our message to the world will be this: You cannot obtain legal status, or become a citizen of the United States by illegally entering our country. This declaration alone will help stop the crisis of illegal crossings and illegal overstays, very importantly. People will know that you can't just smuggle in, hunker down, and wait to be legalized. It's not going to work that way."
Trump again restated his plan to build a 3,219 km wall along the border with Mexico and his intention to make the Mexican government pay for its construction. He also talked about establishing a policy of 'extreme vetting' for potential immigrants.
While Trump's comments are designed to appeal to his core supporters they are almost certainly guaranteed to alienate Latino and other minority groups.
Title: Zika Infections Spread in Singapore
For the first time a pregnant woman has tested positive for the Zika virus in Singapore. Authorities confirmed on Thursday that the total number of cases had risen to 115 and that they had potentially identified a new cluster of infections. The findings indicate that the infection is spreading across the city state. Singapore's health ministry and the National Environment Agency announced on Wednesday that many of the cases were located in the east and Southeast areas. However, despite the growing number of cases locals are remaining calm:
"Of course, asking about the pregnant women, we need to take precautions. We have like mosquito patch or whatever, stay home if they can. We have had SARS before, so I think Singapore will be able to take care of it very well."
It was only a few days ago that Singapore announced the first locally contracted case of Zika but since then the number of infected patients has continued to rise exponentially .
What is Singapore doing to combat the growing number of infections?
The National Environment Agency is expanding its mosquito control operations. This means clearing drains and spraying potential breeding habitats with insecticide in the areas where the virus has been detected.
Title: Southern coastal regions will have an indirect effect of typhoon Namtheun
Unlike yesterday, the nation's capital had typical weather for early autumn but with another typhoon heading towards Japan it looks as if the weather could be about to change again.. so for more, let's go over to Lee Jee-hyun at the weather center. Jee-hyun It was just yesterday that the 10th typhoon of the season dissipated, but already another is on the way?
The 12th typhoon of the season Namtheun is heading towards Kyushu Island and is forecast to make landfall this weekend. Korea will not be directly affected by the typhoon, but ...southern parts of the country will see excessive rainfall due to the indirect effect of the typhoon.
More than 200 millimeters of rain in store for the southern coastal regions while the rest of the southern provinces could see 30 to 100 millimeters and the possibility of strong winds and high waves can't be ruled out.
As for here in Seoul, light rainfall is expected from the morning till mid afternoon so be sure to have an umbrella handy. Temperatures will be a few notches lower on Friday so let's take a closer look.
Seoul and Daegu will start out at 21 degrees Celsius, 23 for Busan and Jeju.
For the highs,
Seoul and Daejeon hit 27 degrees, while Gwangju and Busan see a high of 26 degrees.
That covers Korea -- here's a look at the weather conditions around the world.
Title: Closing
That is our broadcast on this Thursday night. I'm Moon Conn-young. Thank you for watching. For our viewers in other parts of the world, have a good one... for those of you in Korea and across Asia, a good night from Seoul.
