    Title: Opening

It is 9 in New York, 2 p.m. in London, and 10 on a Thursday evening here in Seoul. Hello and welcome to our viewers all across the globe. You're watching Arirang Newscenter.

Title: President Park open to alternate THAAD location, but only within Seongju

President Park Geun-hye says... the government COULD consider a different location for the THAAD battery, an advanced U.S. missile defense system that Seoul and Washington agreed to deploy to South Korea.

A new location... as long as it is within the South's southern County of Seongju.

Her remarks came during a meeting with the ruling Saenuri Party lawmakers earlier today... in an apparent move to embrace the protesting local residents of the County.

The commander-in-chief once again stressed the necessity and safety of THAAD.

Our top office correspondent Song Ji-sun reports.

President Park Geun-hye met with lawmakers from her ruling Saenuri Party who represent the area chosen as the location for a THAAD missile defense system battery.

The lawmakers, who represent Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Seongju, the prospective THAAD location,... said area residents are deeply concerned about the health and safety risks presented by the radar, which they say could penetrate downtown Seongju if THAAD is deployed to the designated location.

President Park said that if there are any alternate locations the county can recommend, the government will thoroughly research them and share the results with Seongju residents.

A potential re-location would be limited to within Seongju County, but Seongju residents have said they are willing to accept an alternative.

"As for deploying THAAD, lawmakers asked the government to listen to local public sentiment and set the base for national security, public safety and toward unification of the two Koreas through a trust-building process on the Korean peninsula."

Seoul's defense ministry said it will undertake the research upon a request from the Seongju County office,... although its previous review of other locations in the county had shown Seongju to be the best candidate.

"President Park also called on local politicians to practice politics that the people want,... while ruling party lawmakers vowed to pass legislation to boost the local economy and create jobs.

    Song Ji-sun, Arirang News."

Title: Disagreement over THAAD roils parliament

Nonetheless, the country's three main political parties are mired in a war over THAAD.

The opposition bloc continues to voice strong opposition to the deployment while the ruling party argues the missile defense system is the only way to deter North Korean threats.

Our parliamentary correspondent Ji Myung-kil looks into the ongoing dispute.

The ruling Saenuri Party has launched an internal task force to address the THAAD deployment.

The issue has become an ongoing source of discord within the National Assembly,... as the rival parties address the pushback from residents in the designated location of Seongju.

"Our party has established a task force on THAAD. It will work with Seongju residents and the local and central governments."

Kim said the task force's top priority will be to gather public opinion on the issue.

It will also hear opinion on how to deal with the ongoing threats from North Korea's missile provocations.

The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea, which opposes the THAAD deployment,... said President Park Geun-hye should have met with Seongju residents,... before her meeting on Thursday with dozens of lawmakers who represent the area.

"The president should have met with the angry Seongju residents first. If the government can't persuade them, then the government's security policy is not legitimate."

The minor opposition People's Party said it is against anything that goes against South Korea's national interest.

"We oppose THAAD, North Korea's provocations and China's diplomatic discourtesy and trade retaliation."

The interim leader also said by deploying THAAD... South Korea is putting the Korean peninsula in a precarious position -- economically, diplomatically and in terms of security.

"The opposition parties are demanding the creation of a parliamentary committee on THAAD,... but the ruling party has already voiced its objections to that, which could mean the political impasse over THAAD will continue for some time.

    Ji Myung-kil, Arirang News."

Title: Chinese media's criticism of THAAD, "It's all Korea's fault'

Since Seoul and Washington announced the deployment of THAAD to the Korean peninsula... China has strongly criticized the decision.

Now, rumor has it various Korean industries with ties to the Chinese market are feeling a direct hit from China's negative sentiment towards South Korea... AND already scheduled TV shows at the risk of being cancelled altogether.

    Hwang Ho jun reports.

Anti-Korean sentiment has been growing in China because of editorials in Chinese state-run media blasting Seoul's decision to deploy THAAD.

The Global Times, sponsored by the People's Daily, is just one media organization that criticized the decision. They said that Seoul will be solely to blame if Korean stars become the scapegoats for the THAAD deployment, emphasizing that "no idol can be above the country."

According to Sina news China, an online poll was conducted via Sina Weibo, a social media platform similar to Twitter. Over 86 percent of the 280,000 people polled said they would support a government ban on South Korean entertainers.

There are even rumors that Korean TV shows and media could be banned in China from September.

In an interview with Korea's Yonhap News agency, a government official who wished to stay anonymous said it's regrettable to see criticisms from Chinese media that are not based on objective facts.

Although Korea has stated that the THAAD deployment is strictly for self-defense, China has repeatedly condemned the decision, saying that it could hurt China's security.

In an apparent demonstration of China's dissatisfaction with Seoul's decision, Chinese officials who were set to make an appearance at a chicken and beer festival in the city of Daegu, canceled at the last minute.

However, as the editorials are all from state media, it's too soon to confirm whether the criticism will have any lasting effect on K Culture consumption in China.

    Hwang Hojun, Arirang News.

Title: S. Korea, U.S., Japan seek united action at UN against N. Korea

    Meanwhile, over in New York...

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting over North Korea's latest ballistic missile launches.

The U.S. is seeking a strong unified message from the UNSC to North Korea... but the UN's most powerful body fell short of adopting a statement... quite possibly with objections from China.

Connie Kim looks has more on the Security Council's stance on North Korea's continued provocation and ongoing tension with China over Seoul and Washington's latest THAAD decision.

Members of the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Wednesday in New York to discuss their response to North Korea's provocations, but failed to agree on adopting a press statement.

Pyongyang fired two missiles on Wednesday from South Hwanghae province, located on its western coast, with one falling into Japan's exclusive economic zone for the first time.

The members have reportedly condemned North Korea for violating the UN Security Council resolution that bans the regime from launching ballistic missiles.

Shortly after the meeting, the UN spokesperson gave voice to the concerns about the North's continuing provocations.

"I think the fact that it reportedly hit into the exclusive economic zone of Japan is indeed deeply troubling and, again, I think the secretary-general, as what I'd just said, would reiterate and renew his call to the DPRK to halt any such activities, which are clearly not conducive to reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula."

South Korea's ambassador to the UN called the launch a clear and present danger,.. noting that the series of missile launches in recent months have been carried out to allow the North to upgrade and refine its missile technologies.

The UN Security Council has held emergency meetings following previous North Korean ballistic missile tests.

But it failed to adopt a press statement back in July, with China reportedly raising opposition to the draft statement in protest against the South Korea-U.S. decision to deploy the THAAD missile defense system to the Korean peninsula.

Members of the UN Security Concil will hold a closed door meeting on Thursday afternoon, eastern standard time, to continue discussions.

The U.S. is set to circulate the draft statement to UN Security Council members, but whether Beijing will agree remains a question.

China's ambassador to the UN has reiterated Beijing's stance that anything that raises tensions on the Korean peninsula will not be allowed.

Title: Army holds event marking anniversary of land-mine attack

One year ago on this day... North Korea's landmines maimed two South Korean soldiers in the Demilitarized Zone, a bufferzone between the two Koreas.

The South Korean army took a moment to remember the provocation.

Our defense correspondent Kim Hyunbin takes us to the scene.

"You could forget our names, but not the fact that North Korea was behind the landmine attack. Besides what happened to us, there have been other ongoing North Korean provocations, so I hope our troops counter those firmly and with a strong sense of duty."

On the location of the attack, a day before the anniversary, the South Korean Army unveiled a tactical reconnaissance drill.

The drill was led by Sergeant First Class Jeong Kyo-seong who was also the reconnaissance team leader during the day of the attack. Jeong gave a strong warning towards Pyongyang that any infiltrations in the future will be paid dearly.

""The enemy will show again for sure, but when it does, we will retaliate a thousand times stronger."

The anniversary of the landmine attack was a solemn reminder that North Korea could launch an attack at any given moment as the two Korea's are technically still at war.

Title: Seoul heatwave intensified by 'urban heat island' effect

Another scorcher for Korea, with most parts of the country under either a heatwave advisory or a heat warning which is a level above an advisory.

But, for those of living in the city... the blazing hot temperatures feel AND in fact do rise even further... intensified by a unique weather phenomenon.

Our Lee Unshin explains how we live on an Urban Heat Island.

It was a day of lighter clothes and fans were a must-have item.

But no matter what people did or went, the blazing conditions on Thursday seemed to have taken over the streets and dominated all aspects of daily life.

Already expected to be the hottest day this year so far, the Korea Meteorological Administration issued heatwave warnings for the capital Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu and Geyonggi-do Province.

    [stand-up]

"And according to its weather forecast, the temperature should be 36-degrees Celsius at its highest today in Seoul. But as you can see right now it's 41 degrees Celsius here in the middle of the city."

This effect is known as the 'urban heat island', and refers to the area in a city that registers significantly higher temperatures than its surrounding suburb or rural areas due to human activities.

The UHI is generally triggered by the concentration of high buildings.

In particular, the materials used to build skyscrapers, such as concrete and metal, absorb heat during the day.

When the heat is then re-radiated, it can linger in the area for longer periods of times, causing continuous tropical nights throughout the season.

With the weather already alarmingly hot this year, taking the necessary precautions to avoid heat related diseases such as heat stroke, is of utmost importance.

    [Interview]

"I can't believe how hot it is right now, I just feel so tired and weary by just stepping out for a couple of hours during the day."

With the weather agency expecting sweltering conditions to continue for the rest of the week, experts are recommending residents, especially the elderly, to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities if possible during the day.

Title: Tesla to set up its first dealership in Korea

You may see more electric vehicles on the roads here in Korea by the year's end.

U.S. EV producer Tesla says it's set to open stores on the peninsula in the next few months.

Analysts say Tesla's entry into the Korean market could signal more commercialization and a bigger market for eco-friendly electric cars and possibly autonomous vehicles in the near future.

Our tech correspondent Kim Ji-yeon reports.

U.S. automobile giant Tesla Motors is set to open its first dealership in Korea... which is expected to offer its globally renowned electric car models to local consumers before the year ends.

The dealership is to be set up in Gangnam, Southern Seoul... and another one in the country's largest complex shopping mall, Starfield Hanam run by Shinsegae Group... slated to open next month.

While displays of Tesla models are sure to attract visitors to the new shopping mall... Tesla's rise is also expected to promote electric vehicles in general among tech-savvy Korean consumers.

"Tesla's move into the Korean market is expected to bring new hype to the premium-end electric vehicles... which first grabbed attention when the government laid out plans late last year to cut billing costs on electricity used for the vehicles and increase the number of recharging stations nationwide. Tesla's move is also expected to motivate local rival automakers to develop models equipped with autopilot mode to target the masses."

Among local brands, the luxury Genesis EQ900 sedan by the country's largest automaker Hyundai Motor... is the only model installed with the autopilot technology.

The same researcher says the price of Tesla's two luxury electric vehicle models sold in local stores are expected to be similar to that sold in neighboring Japan... at around 85-thousand 250 U.S. dollars for the Model S.

The average consumer may be more interested in Tesla's latest and more affordable model, the Model 3, set to be launched late next year, estimated at under 45-thousand dollars.

Title: Spreading Korea's telemedicine knowhow: President Park continues check-up in field

Out in the field to promote and check up on her policies in action...

President Park Geun-hye visited a nursing home in Chungcheongbuk-do Province... to promote a pilot telemedicine program designed to offer those living in isolated areas and the elderly easier access to quality medical services.

Nine out of ten users of the telemedicine technologies said they were satifisfied with the system... with senior citizens at the nursing home also expressing content.

President Park said she hopes to see more people enjoy the benefits of the Internet-based medical care platform.

Title: Spreading Korea's telemedicine knowhows: President Park continues check-up in field

"As an IT powerhouse with excellent medical human resources, Korea has all the conditions to provide the best telemedicine services. So whenever I introduce the idea to other leaders during my state visits, they show great interest and say they would like to adopt our system."

Seoul has so far signed related MOUs with eight countries,... including China, Brazil... and Mongolia, and patients who have received treatments in Korea can now get follow-up checkups after they return home through telemedicine.

Title: 20th Korea Science Festival opens Thursday

Korea has come a long way since it took the first steps into modernization to now... having become a leading powerhouse in various fields, including science and technology.

To celebrate half a century of Korea's scientific progress, a special festival is now underway.

Our Kim Jung-soo gives us a glimpse of what the next 100 years will look like... for Korea's scientific development.

The 20th Korea Science Festival kicked off on Thursday with a congratulatory speech from the First Vice-minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Hong Nam-ki.

He explained that the 4-day festival is meant to offer both education and entertainment, allowing visitors to experience the history and future of Korea's scientific progress.

"I hope people can get a better understanding of just what the fourth industrial revolution is, and also learn about how the revolution will influence their daily lives. We don't want the visitors to be mere spectators, so the booths have been set up with a lot of fun and engaging interactive programs."

The main entrance of the festival features a special exhibition that showcases some of the first inventions made by Korean scientists beginning from the 1960s.

"The 20th Korea Science Festival features a variety of exhibits on topics ranging from augmented reality and driverless vehicles...to designing your own drone. As you can see the venue is filled with visitors, some of whom could become Korea's next scientists."

Over 36 institutions offer a combined 98 exhibitions that feature current and futuristic technologies.

These include a simulation of aerodynamic super-speed trains, a rare glimpse into Korea's ongoing space program, as well as a test-booth where kids could have a go at piloting their own drones.

The festival also features over 170 do-it-yourself booths run by over a 100 educational institutions, both domestic and international.

The booths offer participants a rare opportunity to design and craft their own robots, or code their first ever programs.

"We are from Wonju High school and we got free tickets because our school's science club was chosen to participate in the festival with its own booth. I was always interested in drones and virtual reality, so coming to the festival was a great way to check them out."

Starting from tomorrow, the festival will feature special exhibitions, including lectures from the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, as well as a guest appearance from the lead writers of the Discovery Channel. The festival will continue until Sunday, August 7th.

Title: Support for Donald Trump flounders after controversial remarks

On to the race for the White House...

With his shoot from the hip style,... Donald Trump is known for his controversial statements on just about anything.

But over the past week, it seems the Republican nominee has made even bigger missteps,... leaving a huge dent in his presidential campaign.

    Oh Soo-young reports.

It appears that Donald Trump may finally gone too far with his controversial remarks, which have prompted a widespread backlash against his campaign.

His latest offenses came at a rally in Virginia on Tuesday, where he spoke harshly toward an infant who was crying during his speech, saying: "You can get the baby out of here."

The Republican nominee's verbal attacks on the parents of Humayun Khan, a Muslim U.S. army captain who was killed in Iraq,... and his statement upon receiving a veteran's Purple Heart,... saying he'd always wanted one,... are also examples of his erratic comments and actions this week.

The string of events has drawn strong criticism from people within the party,... who are now one by one revoking their support for the outspoken nominee.

Hewlett Packard executive Meg Whitman, a major GOP fundraiser and donor, announced on Tuesday her decision to support Hillary Clinton.

Whitman branded Trump a "demagogue" and a threat to American democracy.

Trump's refusal to back the re-election bids of Senator John McCain and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who are facing primary battles this month, has made matters worse,...

infuriating Republican heavyweights who are said to be planning an intervention to get Trump's floundering campaign back on track.

President Barack Obama even took the extraordinary step of denouncing Trump's candidacy, calling him "unfit" and "woefully unprepared" to serve as the next U.S. president.

A new Fox News poll on Wednesday shows that Hillary Clinton now has a double digit lead over Trump, despite high distrust of the Democratic nominee.

The survey also shows that almost 70 percent of respondents felt Trump's remarks about the Muslim-American soldier and his family were "out of bounds."

Title: Parliament's defense committee chair invites security experts for seminar on U.S. elections

As many in and outside of Korea keep a close eye on the unpredictable outcome of the 2016 presidential elections in the U.S., the nation's leading security and political experts gathered in Seoul's parliament to discuss how Korea can best prepare for whatever the outcome may be come November.

    Park Ji-won was there.

With presidential campaigning intensifying in the U.S., interest in South Korea grows on who the next president will be, in particular, what policy he or she will take regarding Northeast Asia and North Korea. Against such backdrop, the parliament's National Defense Committee Chair invited some of the nation's leading political and security experts for a special seminar.

"We need to closely look into what policies the U.S. presidential candidates have on the Korean peninsula, as those policies will greatly affect Seoul-Washington relations. That's why I've organized this seminar."

Security and diplomacy experts at the seminar agreed that the South Korea-U.S. alliance and the presence of U.S. troops in South Korea are vital for national security.

"We need to constantly communicate with those who will be in charge in the next administration of U.S. policies regarding the Korean peninsula. So a task force team has been set up at the foreign ministry, with meetings taking place every week."

Experts added that the next U.S. policy makers need to be informed that the North Korean nuclear issue is global threat,... and not only confined to the Korean peninsula.

"If a nuclear war is triggered on the Korean peninsula, there's no guarantee that it won't turn into a World War III. So we need to constantly communicate with the U.S. on how to protect free democracy from irrational actors like North Korea."

Experts also suggested that strengthening networks among politicians in both countries is one way to prepare for the possible changes made by the next U.S. head of state.

"Diplomatic efforts on a parliamentary level could be important, as the Congress is where the U.S. public's opinion is reflected and real policy change directions occur."

Along with the government and the parliament,... South Korea's leading think tanks are keeping a close eye on the major U.S. parties' platforms and possible changes in foreign policy directions until the big day, when the 45th U.S. president is elected, arrives on November 8th.

Title: London Knife Attack: 1 woman killed, 5 injured

An investigation is underway after a deadly knife attack rattled central London. We're learning that an American woman was killed and five other injured in this attack. But, police say there is no evidence of radicalization in the attack.

Kim Hyesung has the latest updates.

One woman has been killed and five others injured in a knife attack in central London.

Police says Wednesday's attack in Russell Square was a random attack triggered by the suspect's mental health issues.

The Metropolitan Police said the 19-year-old Norwegian of Somali origin, was arrested after the incident, and despite initial specualtions, no evidence of terrorist motives was found.

The investigation also concluded that the victims were selected at random. One of them, an American woman in her 60s, died at the scene.

Authorities were called in at 10:33 PM Wednesday local time after reports of a man with a knife injuring people.

The investigation is being handled by the homicide command with support from counter-terrorism officers.

While London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called for the public to remain calm and vigilant, many Londoners can't hide their anxiety or fear.

"I think that the recent attacks in the rest of Europe have got everyone on high alert and I think that there is a lot more anxiety running through London right now."

With heightened tensions following the knife rampage, the biggest terror attack since the 2005 London terror bombings which claimed 52 lives, police say there will dispatch even more armed forces to patrol and protect the city.

    Kim Hyesung, Arirang News.

    Title: Road to Rio Title

Title: 0805 Rio ready for Olympics opening night

All eyes and ears of the world are zooming in on Rioas the countdown to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games enters its final stage.

Normally, the sporting event itself would be all over the media... but it's a bit different this time... with concerns over the Zika virus, violence and protests still very much in the spotlight.

Our Shin Semin is on the ground and she joins us from Rio de Janeiro.

Semin, we're now just over 24 hours away from the opening of the Games. What's it like there on the ground?

Connyoung,... t he build-up to the Olympic Games had been beset by a number of issues, from political scandals, the Zika virus and the Russian state-sponsored doping, all causing distractions.

But with the event still getting underway on Friday local time, these problems seem to fade away as the city is ALREADY-BOMBARDED with visitors, athletes, representatives, journalists, and so on from around the world, all gathered here to be part of the quadrennial world sporting festival.

Rio,... the city of Samba, one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world for its postcard perfect views,is in full-on preparation mode as the first South American city to host the Olympics.

Counting down to the big opening ceremony,Rio hasn't seen this many tourists in years,... maybe ever.

"You always gotta be positive in life and things always happen for the better. I don't even worry."

Despite the excitement, Rio, and Brazil in general, still face a mountain of problems.

Political instability, violent crime and Zika are the main concerns among visitors from overseas and even residents of the city.

"We are worried that the violence would increase this time around, because of all the visitors coming here,... we have the army and the policy all around just because of the event."

The Brazilian government is taking extra security precautions, especially in light of the rising number of terror attacks around the world.

Brazil's Defense Ministry says 85-thousand military and police officers have been drafted in for the Olympics, the country's largest deployment ever.

The organizers of the Olympic Games hope to put all those various issues behind them when world-class athletes from all across the world march through the doors of Maracana Stadium for the Opening Ceremony on Friday, 8pm local time.

    Connyoung?

We definitely will. Our special Olympics coverage begins tomorrow and all the way through the Games. Wonderful reporting, Semin. Our Shin Semin from the 2016 Rio Olympics. Thank you.

Title: Rio 2016 events kick-off with football, but in near empty stadiums

The Opening Ceremony for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games may still be a day away, but one of the events has already kicked off.

The women's football saw its first games on Thursday, but they suffered a rather slow start with some of the stadiums almost empty.

Our Olympics correspondent Kwon Jang-ho reports.

The Rio Olympics have already seen its first wins and its first losses, after the women's football began on Thursday.

The home nation team saw its Brazilian stars record a comfortable three-nil win over China, while reigning champions, USA saw off New Zealand, two-nil.

Friday will see the men's tournament kick-off as well, with Iraq playing Denmark at 1pm local time.

The Korean team will be facing Fiji, one of the lowest ranked footballing nations in the world, and they will be hoping for a big win, to give them a boost in a tough group with Germany and Mexico.

They will also be hoping for a better audience atmosphere than in some of the women's games.

The opening match between Sweden and South Africa, was an underwhelming affair, with attendance of just a few hundred in a 60-thousand seater stadium.

Ticket sales seems to have been a problem in general, with over a million tickets still unsold.

The Rio 2016 organizers have said they will launch a new project giving away almost a quarter of a million tickets to school children.

They've said this would be not a problem because they have reached the 300-hundred dollar revenue target they had set, and that they will now try to fill the stands in less popular events, such as golf, rugby sevens, and hockey.

    Football was not mentioned.

The opening ceremony on Friday at least is expecting a full house and organizers are promising a spectacular show, even with a budget that was slashed by half, due to Brazil's economic difficulties.

But the fireworks do not seem to have been cut, with those in Rio treated to a special preview as the stadium's firework display was given a test run.

Title: Friday could be hotter than Thursday

Time now to get a check on what the weather has in store for us... but today... our Lee Jiyeon is outdoors... tackling the extreme heat with fellow Seoulites.

    Let's go live to Jiyeon.

Jiyeon, tell us, where in Seoul are you tonight?

Hello Conn-young. I am at the Banpo Hangang Park. And it surely was a one steamy day with a record breaking temperature of 35.7 degrees Celsius in the capital.

As we found out from Unshin earlier on... it was burning hot today. So, what are all those people doing at the riverside park at this hour?

The sun is gone but the temperature is still above 30 degrees Celsius in the capital.

But the heat didn't stop people from some summer fun time. People have gathered here with friends or family. And although ist's still a weekday, the place is jam packed,

as this is the peak week of the summer vacation season in Korea. And I had a chance to talk to a few visitors here today.

"I started to wonder if the summer has always this been hot... and high humidity is only making it worse, I have a hard time falling a sleep at night."

"Wow It's unbelievably hot these days, it's too hot "

" At least, I can enjoy fresh breezy air, blowing from the Hangang river at the moment "

"It's still kind of warm but I assume when I walk out there more into the water, it should feel a little bit better."

Well, it seems like we'll have to put up with the sweltering heat for the time being.

Tomorrow should be a repeat of today's blistering conditions for most regions including Seoul under partly sunny skies.

As for the weather outlook, the scorching heat will continue into the weekend here in the capital, so be sure to take the proper precautions.

On that note, let's take a closer look at the readings for tomorrow,

Low in Seoul and Jeju Island will start out at 26 degrees Celsius, while Daejeon, Daegu and Gwangju will have a low of 24 degrees.

    As for the highs,

The high in Seoul will get up to 36 degrees while Daejeong and Gwangju will get up to 35.

Be sure to stay hydrated, and avoid being outdoors during the day

That's Korea for you, and here's a look at the weather conditions around the world.

    Title: Closing

The entire country is simmering in an unusual heat wave... but the worst has yet to come. Tomorrow is forecast to be even hotter. So, beware and take extra caution when outdoors.

That is our broadcast on this hot Summer night. I'm Moon Conn-young. Thanks for watching. For our viewers in other parts of the world, have a good one... for those of you in Korea and across Asia, a good night from Seoul.
